  SenseandSensibilitywasJaneAustensfirstpublishednovel.AlthoughSenseandSensibilityissimilartoherothernovelsinplot,tone,andtypeofcharacters,itdiffersfromtheothersinitsrepresentationofthecourtshipoftwosistersratherthanoneheroine,therearetwo.Inthenovel,ElinorDashwood,anineteenyearoldwomanofsenseandMarianneDashwoodisherseventeenyearoldsisterwithsensibility.ElinorissubduedandquietwhileMarianneisemotionalandromantic.Thetwomaincharacters’storiesaboutfindingahappymarriageinspirereaderstoreadthenovelagainandagainandthinkaboutthethemeofit,whichmaybethereasonforthepopularityofthenovel.

Ifthesetwoconditionsbecometrue,thetwosisterswillendupwithatragedy.However,thereisasolutiontoavoidthetragedythatistomarrysomebodyoutofagreatamountofsenseandalittlesensibility.Obviously,Mariannethinksaboutloveandmarriagewithsenseatlast.Thus,shemarriesBrandon.AndElinorexpresseshertruelovetoEdwardthoughsheisusuallyasymbolofsense.Marriageisamatterofsenseandsensibility.Onlysense,oronlysensibilityisnotawisechoice.Onlytobearagreatamountofsenseandalittlesensibilityinmindcanahappymarriagebenurtured.

  《理智与情感》(SenseandSensibility)该书主要讲述了达什伍德太太跟她的三个女儿——爱莲娜(Elinor)、玛丽安(Marianne)和玛格丽特(Margaret)一直倚靠达什伍德先生的财产过活,然而,当达什伍德先生过身后,四人顿失经济支柱。

由于她们的家诺兰(Norland)必须由他们的同父异母的兄长,约翰·达什伍德(JohnDashwood)承继,所以她们一家都要被扫地出门。

约翰虽受父亲所托照顾后母和妹妹们,但最后仍因他自私刻薄的妻子芬妮(FannyDashwood)劝说而打消念头。

结果四人在自己家里反而不受欢迎,被迫出外寻找新居所。
