themiddlereachesoftheriver,whichhadturnedbrownandmuddyafterpassing

throughtheLoessPlateau.

Onceduringourstayatthepowerstation,wewerecaughtina

thunderstorm.Andwhenrainstopped,Icouldseetricklesofwaterrollingdown

mountainslopesandflowingintothereservoir.Itcarriedlittlemudorsand,

becauseatthattime,treesandgrassstillgrewaroundthereservoir.Andthey

protectedthesoil.AtLongyangXiaIwasstruckbythebeautyofnature,andas

achildIwantedtostaythereandtogrowupwithourYellowRiver.

LiBai,theTangDynastypoet,saidpraisestotheflowingwaterinthe

YellowRiver.Hesawitascomingdownfromheavenandnurturingthepeople

alongherwaytothesea.However,in1997,for330days,notasingledropof

waterfromtheYellowRiverwentintothesea.Anddroughtsarenottheonly

punishmentbynature.Afriendofmyfathers,auniversityprofessor,isdoing

researchontheYellowRiver.Accordingtothisprofessor,theYellowRiverwill

soonchangeitscourseifweallowthissituationtocontinue.Becausethereis

nolongerenoughwatertocarryawaythesiltandmudinthelowerreachesof

Lastyear,whenIwasvisitingAustraliawithagroupofChinesestudents

whohadwonprizesinanEnglishSkillsTest,ourAustralianhostsinvitedusto

jointhemforahorse-rideinthemountains.Aftertwohoursonhorseback,we

reachedavalley,wheretherewasamostbeautifulmeadow,withflowersinall

colorsdottedonahugeblanketofgreen.WhenIbegantopraisethebeautyof

nature,myfriendstoldmethatinthisvalley,thereusedtobeabigmineand

thewastewaterfromthemineturnedeverythingbrown.Whentheminewas

abandoned,peoplemadegreateffortstorestorethegreenvegetation.Theyalso

usedthelatestbiologicaltechnologychoosingthebestgrassseedssuitablefor

thelocalsoil.Sothebeautifulmeadowisaresultofcommitment,hardwork,

andnewtechnology.

WhathappenedtothisvalleyinAustraliashouldalsohappentoourYellow

Riverand,infact,itishappening.Ihaveseenfarmersplantingtreeson

mountainsalongtheYellowRiver.Ihaveseenthemclimbthemountaintopswith
