Large-scaleUSwindpowerwouldcauseawarmingeffectthatwouldtakeroughlyacenturytooffset,"claimstheheadlineonapressreleaseissuedalongsidethestudy,implyingthatthesavingsingreenhousegasemissionwouldn’tcounteractthewarmingfor100years.Otherclimatescientistssaythisparticularclaimismisleading.

Forstarters,thestudyassumesascenariowhereathirdoftheUSiscoveredinwindturbines,sayswindenergyresearcherCristinaArcheroftheUniversityofDelaware.

"ThatmeansyoujumpinyourcarinOhioanddriveallthewaytotheRockyMountains,andallyouseeateverypointiswindturbines(涡轮机),"shesays."It'sacrazyscenariothat’snevergoingtohappen.

Bycontrast,higherlevelsofcarbondioxidetrapheat,increasingthetotalheatcontentoftheatmosphereandocean.ThiseffectlastsformillenniabecauseextraCO2persistsintheatmosphereforthatlong.

Toputthisanotherway,evenifthisstudywasrightaboutthemagnitudeoftheeffect,andeveryinchoflandintheworldwascoveredwithwindturbines,itwouldn'tcauseanymeltingofthepolaricecaps.

Theimpactofwindfarmshastobeconsideredinthecontextofalltheotherchangeswearemakingtotheworld.Theurbanheatislandeffectcanwarmcitiesbyasmuchas12℃comparedwithsurroundingareas,buthasanegligibleeffectonglobaltemperatures.Buildingsaffectwindtoo.
