TheGlomarChallengercompleted96voyagesina15-yearresearchprogramthatendedinNovember1983.Duringthistime,itsailed600,000kilometersandtookalmost20,000samplesofrocksaroundtheworld.Thosesampleshaveallowedgeologiststoreconstructwhattheplanetlookedlikehundredsofmillionsofyearsagoandtomakeoutwhatitwillprobablylooklikemillionsofyearsinthefuture.Today,largelyonthestrengthofevidencegatheredduringtheGlomarChallenger’svoyages,nearlyallearthscientistsagreeonthetheoriesofplatetectonics(构造学)andcontinentaldriftthatexplainmanyofthegeologicalprocesses.
