PanelistMichelAkavitoldtheaudiencethatwhenheaskedaconferenceorganizerwherethepanelwastakingplace,sherepliedthatpeoplewouldbe"arrivingalittlelateandabitslowly.Isaid,'Great.Theyneedalogisticssessiontowakethemup.'"

Akaviprovidedthatwake-upcallwithadiscussionofwhatheseesaseighttrendsthatcurrentlyaffectlogistics.Thefirstisthe"explosion"ofglobaltradeandglobalproductionduetothe"thetopplingoftheoldpoliticalorder,especiallythefallofcommunism.Inaddition,customsbarriershavefallen,especiallyinEurope,andthereisgreatertradebetweenthecontinent'seasternandwesternparts.AkavialsocitedNAFTA（NorthAmericaFreeTradeAgreement）,MERCOSUR（theSouthAmericanFreeTradePact）,theWorldTradeOrganization,andGATT（GeneralAgreementonTariffsandTrade）ascreatinga"waveofinternationaltrade.Themorethishappens,themorethereisaneedforlogistics."

Thethirdtrendisthatwenowliveinan"on-demandworld,Akavisaid."Weareatime-is-moneysociety.Wearemovingtotime-basedcompetition.Speedisalmostmoreimportantthanacheapprice.Youseethatinmicroelectronics,withchipsandgameconsuls.WithPCsandphones,thetermusedis'agility'--theabilitytogettothemarketfirst.Demandischangingthelogisticsworld."

Thefourthtrendisagrowingenvironmentalsensibility.Peoplenowask:

"Howcanwetransportless,moreefficiently,andhowcanwedomorerecycling,"Akavisaid."InEurope,weseethatthetrucksonhighwaysaregettingmorerestricted.Austriaisbanningsometrucktrafficonweekends.Railsarebeingusedmoreoftentotransportgoodsbecauselessenergyisused.Thereisalsomoreconcernaboutnoisyplanes.WehadtochangeourfleetinBrusselstoquieterplanes,andwearemovingtheBrusselshubtoLeipzig,Germany,anareawheretherearelesspeople.Environmentalconcernsareshapingtheindustry."

Thefifthtrendisthe"rediscoveryofstructuralprocessorganization,"basedongreaterefficiencyandbetterorganization,andthesixthtrendisthe"deregulationandprivatizationofpublicservicesincommunicationandtransport.Weareagoodexample,"saidAkavi.DeutschePost,whichownsDHL,"usedtobeasleepyinefficientpostalsystemforGermany.Afteritwasprivatizedandmodernized,itstartedtobecomeprofitable.Thenitwonderedwhatitshoulddo;itcouldn'tjustsellstampsallitslife.Soitmovedfromapostalservicetoanintegratedlogisticsandtransportcompany."

Theseventhtrendisanorientationtowardshareholdervalue."Logisticsismovingtofocusoncorecompetencies.Wehaveseencompaniesdivestsotheycanconcentrateontheircorebusiness.Thereismoreoutsourcingofthetransportfunction,"whichhelpsthirdpartyproviderslikeDHLexpandandalsofuelsthegrowthofspecializedtransportlogisticscompanies.

Theeighthandlasttrend,accordingtoAkavi,isnewercommunicationstechnologies."WiththeInternet,youcanfindoutwhereyourshipmentisandcontactyourcallcenterifthepackageisstuck.Butnow,youcanalsousemobilephones[todothat].Trackingandtracingisbecomingmoreavailable.Ourcompanycantraceallshipmentsautomaticallyanddetectthosethatarestuckbeforetheclientrealizestheshipmenthasn'tarrived."TheRFID--radiofrequencyidentificationtags--technologyis"enormouslyimportantforoursector.WithoutRFID,itwouldbeveryhardtofindyourshipmentinourhugewarehouses.This[technology]willhaveagreatimpactinthecomingyears."

MirzanbinMahathir,whodescribedhisKualaLumpur-basedcompany,KonsortiumLoistiksBerhad,assplitintologisticscomponentsandlogisticssolutions,echoedAkavi'scommentthatcompaniesareoutsourcingtheirlogisticsmoreandmoreinordertoconcentrateoncorecompetencies.Hewentontonotethat"thebridgetoglobalprosperityhastwolevels,"thecountrylevelandthecompanylevel.

Onthecountrylevel,"nationsmustdeveloptheirlogisticsinfrastructureinordertocompete.It'snotenoughtoattractmanufacturingifyoucan'tgetmanufacturedgoodtothemarketinanefficientway,"hesaid.Infrastructureincludesbuildingports,airports,roadsandbridgestomove,notjustgoods,butpeople.Airportsareespeciallycritical:

"IntheMiddleEasteveryoneisrealizingthatairportsareavitalpieceofinfrastructure"andmanyofthemarebeingbuilt,someclosetogether.

"Butthehardwareitselfisnotenough.Physicalinfrastructuredoesn'thelpifitisnotgoingtobeusedeffectively,"Mirzannoted.Threethingsareneeded:

informationtechnology,efficientphysicalmovementandareliablefinancialsystem."Indevelopingcountries,thesethreethingsneedtogohandinhand.Inafewplacesthishashappened,likeSingapore.Anditisimprovinginsomeoftheothercountriesaswell."

Inthelogisticsbusiness,Mirzanadded,goodsneedtobesentasdirectlyaspossibletothemarket,andtheyneedtoreachtheirdestinationontime.Yetvariousgovernmentobstaclescanhinderthatprocess,includingexcesspaperwork,burdensomeinspections,andcorruption."Iftheleadershipinanycountryweretolookatlogisticsandseeitsroleinbringingprosperitytoitspeople,theywouldhavetoaddresstheseareas."Somecountriesgetit,Mirzansaid;othersdon't.

Fromthecompanystandpoint,headded,somearestartingtolookatthemselvesaslogisticscompaniesevenwhentheyareproducingactualgoods;itisacompetitiveadvantage.Dell,hesuggested,"isactuallyalogisticscompanythathappenstobeinthebusinessofcomputers.Theyareveryefficientatdoingwhattheydo,butitismainlylogistics."

SoftwareSolutions

PanelistYavuzCizmeci,chairmanofACTAirlines,remindedtheaudiencethatIstanbulhashistoricallybeenalogisticalcrossroadsforcommerceandtrade,andthatTurkeyitselfispoisedtobealogisticscenterofthefuture.Thetrendnow,hesaid,isformanybigcompaniestoopenbranchesinTurkeyorbuycompaniesalreadythere,readytotakeadvantageofthecountry'sincreasingtrade,anditssea,truck,railwayandaircrafttransportationoptions.Spendingonlogistics,hesaid,shouldtakeoffinthenearfuture.

Duringaquestionandanswersession,Akaviwasaskedhowhiscompanyusessoftwaresolutionstooptimizeitslogistics,suchastruckloads."Softwareisnotlogistics'corebusiness,"hesaid."Whilethereisstillalotofsoftwaredevelopmenthappeninginhouse,weareworkingmoreandmorewithsoftwaredeveloperstofindsolutions....About6%to7%ofourrevenueisspentonITandanincreasingamountofitisoutsourced."
