Low-voltageequipmentstandardsIEC60947andIEC60439currentlyincludeshort-circuit

ratingsforproductsandassembliesrespectively,definedintermsoftheabilityofthe

equipmenttooperateatalevelofpeakcurrent,anr.m.s.currentforaspecifiedtimeand/ora

levelofcurrentconditionaluponashort-circuitprotectivedeviceinseries.Inpracticethe

correctapplicationofthevariousshort-circuitratingsneedstobefullyunderstoodbythe

circuitdesignertoavoidleavingacircuitorequipmentwithinadequateshort-circuit

protection.Itisalsousefultotakefulladvantageofthecapabilityofdevicesandsystemsto

avoidover-engineering,withtheconsequentunnecessaryadditionalcost.
