In1831,theBritishGovernmentsentashipcalledBeagletoSouthAmericatomakemapsofthecoast.Atthattime,DarwinwasayoungmaninhistwentieswhohadstudiedscienceinEdinburghandCambridge.Throughafriend,hewasofferedthejobofstudyingtheplantsandanimalsofthedifferentcountriesthattheBeaglewastovisit.Darwin’sfathertoldhimnottogo,andthecaptainoftheBeaglesaidthathedidnotliketheshapeofDarwin’snose;butthatdidnotstophim,andinDecemberofthatyear,DarwinsailedforSouthAmerica.Hespentfiveyearsontheship,collectingmanysamplesandwritingdownhisobservationsaboutthelivingthingshefound.
