Melville’snextbook,Pierre,wasalmostcompletelydisregardedbythepublic.DebtfrustrationandillhealthfinallyforcedMelvilletotakealow-payingjobasacustomsinspector.Eventually,Melvilleabandonedprose(散文)andbegantowritepoetry.

TheCivilWaristhemainsubjectofMelville’spoetry.Heandhisbrothermadeatriptothefrontline,andhepublishedabookofpoems,Battle-PiecesandAspectsofWar,basedonthisexperience.

Melvillediedin1891attheageof72atthispoint,hisworkhadbeencompletelyforgottenbythepublic.Histalentwastogounrecognizedforthenextthirtyyears.Then,in1920s,hisreputationbegantoimproveascriticsandreadersrediscoveredhiswork.TodayMobyDickisoneofthebest-knownnovelseverpennedbyanAmericanauthor.
