Introduction
"Emotionalintelligencequotient",alsocalled"emotionalintelligence,"isabbreviatedforEQ.TheconceptofemotionalintelligenceisbroughtforwardfirstbyYaleuniversitypsychologist,PeterSalovey(1990).Hstatesthattheemotionalintelligenceistomonitorone’spersonalemotionsortoidentifyfeelingsofothers,andidentifyandusethesesignalstoguideone’sthoughtsandactions.SincethenEQbecameknowntothepublicandgraduallywaspaidattentiontointhefieldofeducation.
Inrecentyears,thedomesticandforeignexpertshavedonethefurtherstudyonemotionalintelligence,andtheypointoutthatEQisanindispensableabilitytoone’ssuccess.Zhu(1993)attachedgreatimportancetotheEQinlearning,andstipulatedthatEQdecidedwhetheronecanornotstudywell.
Itisveryimportanttocultivatestudents'sentimentinEnglishteaching.TeachersshouldgivefullplaytoitsadvantagesinEnglishteaching.Itcanhelpstudentsdeveloptheirgoodpsychologicalqualities,goodcommunicationskillsandteamworkspirist,andletthembecomethe21stcentury'stalents.
1EQandEnglishTeaching
Withtheimplementationofthepolicyofreformandopeningtotheoutsideworldandtherapiddevelopmentofmodernscienceandtechnology,ourcountryshouldlearnadvancedscienceandtechnologyfromthewesterncountriestospeedupourconstructionoffourmodernizations.NowadayslearningEnglishbecomesmoreandmoreimportant.ItisnecessaryformiddleschoolstudentstolearnEnglishwellinorderthattheycanservethecountrybetterinthefuture.Thestudentsarethefutureofourcountry.Therefore,Englishisplacedasanimportantbasicsubjectinhighschools.Andnowtest-orientededucationisbeingchangedintoquality-orientededucation.ItisnecessarytopopularizeforeignlanguageteachingandimproveEnglishteaching.OnlyinthiswaycanwefostertalentswithasrongEnglishabilitytomeettheneedsofthesociety.
ImprovingthequalityofEnglishteachingisalwaysimportant.Modernscientificresearchshowsthatthedifferenceinlearningresultsbetweenstudentsaremainlydecidedbythedifferentemotionalintelligence,which,inturn,isaffetedbytheirfamilybackground,society,environment,emotion,interest,andstudymethod.Therefore,howtoimprovestudents'Englishteachingintheemotionalintelligence,hasveryimportantpracticalsignificance.Manyteachersknowthatwhenastudentdoesn’tstudywell,andcriticizedbyhisteacher,hislearningwillgetworse.Onthecontrary,iftheteacherencouragesastudentbysayingthatheispotentialinlearning,hislearningwillbecomebetterandbetter.
Teachersshouldarousestudents’interestinlearningEnglish.Thiscanbeacievedbyintegratingstudents’lifeexperienceintoEnglishlearning.Besidesinteachinggroupworkshouldbeadvocated.Furthermoreteachersshouldpaymoreattentiontotheimprovementofteachingmethods,whichcanimprovestudents'emotionalintelligence,improveteachingeffects,andachievegoodresults.
2CultivatingStudents’EmotionalQuotientinEnglishTeaching
2.1Theimportantoftheteachers’behaviors
Teachers’ownbehaviorpalysanimportantroleinstudent’slearning.Studentsoftenlooktotheirteachersforguidance.Soteachersshouldbehavethemselveswellbothinclassandafterclass.
2.1.1Bodylanguage
Englishteachingisakeypartoftheschooleducation.Nowadays,intheEnglishclass,teachersinstructstudentsandexplainquestionsbasicallyinEnglish.AndstudentsarealsorequiredtouseEnglishinclass.However,thestudentsinmiddleschoolscan’tspeakwell.Theirvocabularyandexpressiveabilityarelimitedtoo.InordertoencouragestudentstolearnEnglishinclass,bodylanguageisrequired.For,itcanstimulatestudents’interestinEnglishclass.Sothatitcanmaketheclassroomatmosphereactive,invokethestudent’senthusiasmforstudy,andleadthestudenttounderstandingEnglisheasily.
Inmiddleschools,usingbodylanguageinEnglishteachingisnecessaryandimportant.Generallyspeaking,bodylanguagecanarouseandsustainthestudent’sinterestinEnglishclass.Usingbodylanguagecangetridofstudent’sfeelingofbeingdullandtired.ThevividgesturetogetherwiththefluentEnglishcancreateagoodcircumstanceoflearning.IntheEnglishclass,ifteachersstandintheplatformanddon’tmovefrombeginningtotheend,thestudentsmustfeelbored.Onthecontrary,intheEnglishclass,iftheteachersexplainthetextgoingwithbodylanguage,thestudentsmustfinditinteresting.Thebodylanguagealsomadethetextclearly,especiallyinEnglishteaching.AChinesefamouslinguistLuShuxiangoncesaidEnglishteacherisacomic–actor,whoisgoodatperform.Thatistosay,inEnglishclass,bodylanguageandgesturepalyanimportantroleinteaching.
Forexample,whenteachingthelessonaboutthetimewhennewstudentsfirstmeetandtheydon’tknoweachother,theteachercanintroducehimselffirst.Hecansay‘‘Hello,everyone.Nicetomeetyou.NowIwillintroducemyselftoyou.MynameisPatty.Ilikeplayingping-pongball.For,itmakesmemuchstronger;Ilikeplayingchess.For,itmakesmecleverer;Ilikereadingbooks.For,itmakesoneperfect.’’Duringtheintroduction,theteachershouldusethenewvocabulariesandsentencesstructuretogetherwithavividexpressionandmatinggesturesaspossibleashecan.Hesmileswhensayinghellototheclass.Heshakeshandswithsomestudentssaying‘‘Nicetomeetyou.’’Afterhisintroduction,theteachercancreatecircumstanceforstudentstopractice.Usually,theapplicationofbodylanguagecanmaketheclassroomactiveandfullofhappiness.
UsingbodylanguageinEnglishclass,studentsaredeeplyimpressedbythebodymovementofteachersandthemselves(Zhang,2001).Asamatteroffact,theeffectofteachers’bodylanguageonthestudentsisreflectednotonlybyestablishingagoodexample,butalsoinshorteningtheteachers-studentsestrangementbywhichamoreharmoniousstudyingatmosphereiscreated.
2.1.2PositiveEvaluation
Evaluationisnotonlyafeedbackofstudents’learning,butalsoanecessarysteptopromotetheteaching.Thestudentsneedteacher’sevaluation,becausetheteacher’sevaluationcanenablesthestudentstofeelhisrespectandcare.Therefore,duringtheteachingteachershouldattachimportancetotheevaluation.Teachermustusetheproperevaluationforthestudentsintheclass,especiallyafteransweringquestions,teachersshoulduseencouragementlanguage.Toacorrectanswer,theteachergivespositiveaffirmation:
"Good/Excellent/connectedChristmas/".Iftheanswerisnotquiteright,theteachershouldalsobeencouragingbysayingsuchas“that’salmostcorret,betterthanlasttime”.Iftheanswerisabsolutelywrong,theteachershouldnotscoldthestudents.Insteadheshouldfindsomethingpositiveintheanswerandencouragethestudent.Forexample,hecansay"youranswerisnotright,butyourpronunciationisverygood”,or“no,it’snottherightanswertothisquestion,butit’salsoveryimportant,thankyou”andsoon.”Teachersshouldpayattentiontoprotectingself-respectandself-confidenceofeachstudentand,cultivatingtheirinterestinlearning.Inaddition,teachersshouldalsobeopentostudents’criticismsoastoestablishagoodrelationshipbetweenteachersandtheirstudents.
2.2Theestablishingofharmoniousteacher-studentrelationship
Teachingandlearningareinterrelated(Wang,2005).So,tosetupagoodrelationshipbetweenteachersandstudentsisveryimportant.Accordingtothepsychologicalcharacteristicofstudents,theydesiretocloseandtrusttheirteachers.Iftheyspeakhighlyofacertainteacher,theywilltakegreatinterestintheclass.Thestudentswillattachgreatimportancetotheclass.Furthermore,theywillmakeadecisiontolearnthesubject.Itiscertainthattheclassroomatmosphereispronounced.Thatistosay,‘‘Loveme,lovemydog.’’Onthecontrary,ifthestudentsdonotliketheteacher,becauseoftheirinversepsychology,theydonotliketohavesuchclassorevendon’tcometotheclass.Weoftencanseethisfact.Asamatteroffact,teachers’friendlyappearancecanencouragestudents’studyingenthusiasm(Yuan,2005)..
Theteacher,however,needstospendmuchtimetalkingwiththeirstudentsandknowabouttheirinterest,hobbies.Besides,teachersshouldpaymoreattentiontostudents’mood,suchashappiness,anger,sorrow,andlaugh.Ingeneral,teachersshouldtakegoodcareofstudentsandexpresstheirkindnesstothembywords,looks,actions.Sothatstudentswillnotfeelnervousintheclass.Thatisnottosay,teachersshouldnotcriticizethestudents’shortcomingsandmistakes.Nomatterhowteacherscriticizeorpraisetheirstudents,theyonlyhaveonepurposethatistoprotectthem.Duringthecriticism,teacherscouldnotinjurestudents’self-esteemandpersonality.Beingcriticized,studentscouldintrospectandknewwhatteachers’purposewas.Fromtheinnermostfeeling,theyfeelateacher’scriticismisthesincerelove.Thus,theclassroomatmospherewillbecomebetterandbetter.Studentsalsowanttohaveclassesandlearnthesubjectwell.IntheEnglishclass,teachersexpresstheirfeelingbywords,byexpressionwhichisfriendly,encouraging,andtrustful.Sothatstudentsdaretoanswerthequestionsanddonotworryaboutmakingmistakes.Thestudentswillanswerthequestionsfrequentlyandloudly.Thatistosay,student’smoodplaysanimportantroleinclass.
