Masculinitymimickedbymenwhogrewupwithnofathers, camouflagewornbybullieswhoaredangerouslyarmed butneedhugs. Teacherspaidlessthanwhatitcoststhemtobehere. Oceansofadolescentscomeheretoreceivelessons butneverlearntoswim, partliketheRedSeawhenthebellrings.

08Andhewouldpointthisoutasevidence thatwefearthejudgmentofourpeers, andthatwe’reembarrassedaboutshowingourideas topeoplewethinkofasourpeers,tothosearoundus.Andthisfeariswhatcausesus tobeconservativeinourthinking. Sowemighthaveawildidea,butwe’reafraidtoshareitwithanybodyelse.

35OK,soifyoutrythesameexercisewithkids, theyhavenoembarrassmentatall. Theyjustquitehappilyshowtheirmasterpiece towhoeverwantstolookatit. Butastheylearntobecomeadults, theybecomemuchmoresensitivetotheopinionsofothers, andtheylosethatfreedomandtheydostarttobecomeembarrassed. Andinstudiesofkidsplaying,it’sbeenshown timeaftertimethatkidswhofeelsecure, whoareinakindoftrustedenvironment-- they’retheonesthatfeelmostfreetoplay.

15Andifyou’restartingadesignfirm,let’ssay, thenyouprobablyalsowanttocreate aplacewherepeoplehavethesamekindofsecurity. Wheretheyhavethesamekindofsecuritytotakerisks.Maybehavethesamekindofsecuritytoplay.

32BeforefoundingIDEO,Davidsaidthatwhathewantedtodo wastoformacompanywherealltheemployeesaremybestfriends. Now,thatwasn’tjustself-indulgence. Heknewthatfriendshipisashortcuttoplay. Andheknewthatitgivesusasenseoftrust, anditallowsusthentotakethekindofcreativerisks thatweneedtotakeasdesigners. Andso,thatdecisiontoworkwithhisfriends-- nowhehas550ofthem--waswhatgotIDEOstarted.

14Andourstudios,like,Ithink,manycreativeworkplacestoday, aredesignedtohelppeoplefeelrelaxed:
familiarwiththeirsurroundings, comfortablewiththepeoplethatthey’reworkingwith. Ittakesmorethandecor,butIthinkwe’veallseenthat creativecompaniesdooftenhavesymbolsintheworkplace thatremindpeopletobeplayful, andthatit’sapermissiveenvironment. So,whetherit’sthismicrobusmeetingroom thatwehaveinoneourbuildingsatIDEO; oratPixar,wheretheanimatorsworkinwoodenhutsanddecoratedcaves; orattheGoogleplex,where it’sfamousforits[beach]volleyballcourts, andeventhismassivedinosaurskeletonwithpinkflamingosonit. Don’tknowthereasonforthepinkflamingos, butanyway,they’rethereinthegarden. OrevenintheSwissofficeofGoogle, whichperhapshasthemostwackyideasofall.Andmytheoryis,that’ssotheSwisscanprove totheirCaliforniancolleaguesthatthey’renotboring. Sotheyhavetheslide,andtheyevenhaveafireman’spole. Don’tknowwhattheydowiththat,buttheyhaveone.
