Confuciusisworldrenownedasaneducator,philosopherandpolitician,andwasthefounderofConfuciusTheorywhichhashadaprofoundimpactonEastAsianculture.Hishometown,Qufu,istheholygrailofpilgrimagedestinationsforthosewhowishtostudyhisteachings.Therearethreeessentialhistoricalsitesthatrelatetohislife–theTempleofConfucius,theCemeteryofConfucius,andtheKongFamilyMansion.Together,thesethreelocationshavebeenlistedasaUNESCOWorldHeritageSitesince1994.

TempleofConfucius:

ThisbuildingwasthefirsttemplebuilttoworshipConfuciusandConfucianism.Sinceitsconstruction,numerousothertempleshavebeenbuilttohonorConfuciusacrossChinaandaroundtheworld.Thisgroupofbuildingsistheonlyvenuetoattainthelofty“emperor’sbuilding”distinction,havingbeenconstructedtohonorapersonageotherthananemperor.TheTempleofConfuciusisstructurallyreminiscentoftheForbiddenCityinBeijingandprovidestheblueprintfortheInternationalConfuciusTemple.

CemeteryofConfucius:

ThissiteisthefinalrestingplaceofConfucius,hisdescendants,andinnumerabledisciples.Afterhepassedaway,hisstudentsfilledtheareawithtoweringtreestohonorhim,givingthecemeterytheappearanceofagardenorasmallforest.ThissitealsocontainsthousandsoftombstonesinscribedwithtraditionalChinesecalligraphy.

KongFamilyMansion:

ThismansionisanenormousbuildingwheredescendantsofConfuciuslivedforhundredsofyears.Astheso-called“firstfamilyofChina”,theKongfamilywasincontrolofthelargestprivateruralestateinChina.TheywereknownasthemostprestigiousfamilyoutsideoftheroyaltyinChina.Thefamilywouldalsoconductelaboratereligiousceremoniesatthemansiontocommemorateandblessplantings,harvests,birthdaysandthedead.
