科技改变世界，但它更为盲人的生活带来前所未有的便利。

联合国残疾人权利委员会主席ronmccallum自幼失明。

1987年，他拥有了第一台盲人专用电脑。

由于有了电脑，有声读物（talkingbooks）和志愿者们的帮助，他成为了一个贪婪的阅读者，同时也成为了一名律师和学者。

　　iwasbornprematurebyabout10weeks,whichresultedinmyblindness,some64yearsago.theconditionisknownasretrolentalfibroplasia,anditsnowveryrareinthedevelopedworld.littledidiknow,lyingcurledupinmyprimbabyhumidicribin1948thatidbeenbornattherightplaceandtherighttime,thatiwasinacountrywhereicouldparticipateinthetechnologicalrevolution.

　　thereare37milliontotallyblindpeopleonourplanet,butthoseofuswhovesharedinthetechnologicalchangesmainlycomefromnorthamerica,europe,putershavechangedthelivesofusallinthisroomandaroundtheworld,butithinktheyvechangedthelivesofweblindpeoplemorethananyothergroup.andsoiwanttotellyouabouttheinteractionbetweencomputer-basedadaptivetechnologyandthemanyvolunteerswhohelpedmeovertheyearstobecomethepersoniamtoday.itsaninteractionbetweenvolunteers,passionateinventorsandtechnology,anditsastorythatmanyotherblindpeoplecouldtell.butletmetellyouabitaboutittoday.

　　wheniwasfive,iwenttoschoolandilearnedbraille.itsaningenioussystemofsixdotsthatarepunchedintopaper,andicanfeelthemwithmyfingers.infact,ithinktheyreputtingupmygradesixreport.idontknowwherejulianmorrowgotthatfrom.（laughter）iwasprettygoodinreading,butreligionandmusicalappreciationneededmorework.（laughter）

　　wheniwasatschool,thebooksweretranscribedbytranscribers,voluntarypeoplewhopunchedonedotatatimesoidhavevolumestoread,andthathadbeengoingon,mainlybywomen,sincethelate19thcenturyinthiscountry,butitwastheonlywayicouldread.wheniwasinhighschool,igotmyfirstphilipsreel-to-reeltaperecorder,andtaperecordersbecamemysortofpre-computermediumoflearning.icouldhavefamilyandfriendsreadmematerial,andicouldthenreaditbackasmanytimesasineeded.anditbroughtmeintocontactwithvolunteersandhelpers.forexample,whenistudiedatgraduateschoolatqueensuniversityincanada,theprisonersatthecollinsbayjailagreedtohelpme.igavethemataperecorder,andtheyreadintoit.asoneofthemsaidtome,"ron,weaintgoinganywhereatthemoment."

　　butthinkofit.thesemen,whohadnthadtheeducationalopportunitiesidhad,helpedmegainpost-graduatequalificationsinlawbytheirdedicatedhelp.

　　well,iwentbackandbecameanacademicatmelbournesmonashuniversity,andforthose25years,taperecorderswereeverythingtome.infact,inmyofficein1990,ihad18milesoftape.students,familyandfriendsallreadmematerial.mrs.loisdoery,whomilatercametocallmysurrogatemum,readmemanythousandsofhoursontotape.oneofthereasonsiagreedtogivethistalktodaywasthatiwashopingthatloiswouldbeheresoicouldintroduceyoutoherandpubliclythankher.butsadly,herhealthhasntpermittedhertocometoday.butithankyouhere,lois,fromthisplatform.

　　itwasinventedbyrussellsmith,apassionateinventorinnewzealandwhowastryingtohelpblindpeople.sadly,hediedinalightplanecrashinXX,buthismemorylivesoninmyheart.itmeant,forthefirsttime,icouldreadbackwhatihadtypedintoit.ithadaspeechsynthesizer.idwrittenmyfirstcoauthoredlaborlawbookonatypewriterin1979purelyfrommemory.thisnowallowedmetoreadbackwhatidwrittenandtoenterthecomputerworld,evenwithits84kofmemory.

　　in1974,thegreatraykurzweil,theamericaninventor,workedonbuildingamachinethatwouldscanbooksandreadthemoutinsyntheticspeech.opticalcharacterrecognitionunitsthenonlyoperatedusuallyononefont,butbyusingcharge-coupleddeviceflatbedscannersandspeechsynthesizers,hedevelopedamachinethatcouldreadanyfont.andhismachine,whichwasasbigasawashingmachine,waslaunchedonthe13thofjanuary,1976.isawmyfirstcommerciallyavailablekurzweilinmarch1989,anditblewmeaway,andinseptember1989,themonththatmyassociateprofessorshipatmonashuniversitywasannounced,thelawschoolgotone,andicoulduseit.forthefirsttime,icouldreadwhatiwantedtoreadbyputtingabookonthescanner.ididnthavetobenicetopeople!

　　now,thekurzweilreaderissimplyaprogramonmylaptop.thatswhatitsshrunkto.andnowicanscanthelatestnovelandnotwaittogetitintotalkingbooklibraries.icankeepupwithmyfriends.

　　therearemanypeoplewhohavehelpedmeinmylife,andmanythatihaventmet.oneisanotheramericaninventortedhenter.tedwasamotorcycleracer,butin1978hehadacaraccidentandlosthissight,whichisdevastatingifyouretryingtoridemotorbikes.hethenturnedtobeingawaterskierandwasachampiondisabledwaterskier.butin1989,heteamedupwithbilljoycetodevelopaprogramthatwouldreadoutwhatwasonthecomputerscreenfromthenetorfromwhatwasonthecomputer.itscalledjaws,jobaccesswithspeech,anditsoundslikethis.

　　thistechnologythatfascinatedmein1987isnowonmyiphoneandonyoursaswell.but,youknow,ifindreadingwithmachinesaverylonelyprocess.igrewupwithfamily,friends,readingtome,andilovedthewarmthandthebreathandtheclosenessofpeoplereading.doyoulovebeingreadto?

andoneofmymostenduringmemoriesisin1999,maryreadingtomeandthechildrendownnearmanlybeach"harrypotterandthephilosophersstone."isntthatagreatbook?

istilllovebeingclosetosomeonereadingtome.butiwouldntgiveupthetechnology,becauseitsallowedmetoleadagreatlife.

　　ofcourse,talkingbooksfortheblindpredatedallthistechnology.afterall,thelong-playingrecordwasdevelopedintheearly1930s,andnowweputtalkingbooksoncdsusingthedigitalaccesssystemknownasdaisy.butwhenimreadingwithsyntheticvoices,ilovetocomehomeandreadaracynovelwitharealvoice.

　　nowtherearestillbarriersinfrontofwepeoplewithdisabilities.manywebsiteswecantreadusingjawsandtheothertechnologies.websitesareoftenveryvisual,andthereareallthesesortsofgraphsthatarentlabeledandbuttonsthatarentlabeled,andthatswhytheworldwidewebconsortium3,knownasw3c,hasdevelopedworldwidestandardsfortheinternet.andwewantallinternetusersorinternetsiteownerstomaketheirsitescompatiblesothatwepersonswithoutvisioncanhavealevelplayingfield.thereareotherbarriersbroughtaboutbyourlaws.forexample,australia,likeaboutonethirdoftheworldscountries,hascopyrightexceptionswhichallowbookstobebrailledorreadforweblindpersons.butthosebookscanttravelacrossborders.forexample,inspain,therearea100,000accessiblebooksinspanish.inargentina,thereare50,000.innootherlatinamericancountryaretheremorethanacoupleofthousand.butitsnotlegaltotransportthebooksfromspaintolatinamerica.therearehundredsofthousandsofaccessiblebooksintheunitedstates,britain,canada,australia,etc.,buttheycantbetransportedtothe60countriesinourworldwhereenglishisthefirstandthesecondlanguage.andrememberiwastellingyouaboutharrypotter.well,becausewecanttransportbooksacrossborders,therehadtobeseparateversionsreadinallthedifferentenglish-speakingcountries:

britain,unitedstates,canada,australia,andnewzealandallhadtohaveseparatereadingsofharrypotter.
