OnepopularviewofVincentVanGoghisthathismentalhealthproblemsgavehimsomeofhisartisticgenius(天才).ButanewexhibitioninAmsterdam’sVanGoghMuseumintheNetherlandsarguesthatthiswasnotthecase.TheexhibitionquestionswhetherdepressionhelpedtheDutchartist,whoshothimselfinacornfieldinParisin1890.

Similarly,thefindingbyAmericanbiographersStevenNaifehandGregoryWhiteSmiththatVanGoghwasshotbysomeoneelseischallengedintheexhibition.Themuseumdisplaysthegunheprobablyusedinhissuicide(自杀).Otherevidenceintheexhibition,includinghislastworksofartthatgiveawayhisdarkthoughts,backsupthebeliefthatVanGoghdiedbysuicide.

WhenastronomersusingEarth-basedtelescopestostudyTRAPPIST–1,theynoticedthateveryonceinawhile,itbecameslightlydim(昏暗).Theydecidedthataplanetmustbepassinginfrontofthestar,blockingpartofthelight.Thisdimmingwouldcomeandgoastheplanetorbitedthestar,passingalternately(交替地)behindandinfrontofthestarregularly.

Bymakingcarefulobservations,astronomersexpectedtogetaroughideaoftheplanet’ssizefromthepatternofdimminglight.Butthelightlevelchangedoftenandnotatevenlyspaced(间隔的)times.Theastronomershadtoconcludetheywerelookingatmorethanoneplanet!

Togetadditionaldata,NASA’sSpitzerTelescopemeasuredTRAPPIST–1’sbrightnessnearlycontinuouslyfor20days,catching34crossingsofplanetsinfrontofthestar.Sortingthroughthemessofdata,theastronomersfoundthatinnermostplanetcompletesitsorbitin1.5Earthdays,whiletheoutermostplanettakes20days.Onceyouknowhowlongittakeseachplanettocompleteanorbit,youcanworkoutfaritisfromthestarcomparedwiththeotherplanets.

TheTRAPPIST–1planetsarenotalone.Sofar,astronomershavefoundmorethan3,400planetsthatorbitotherstars.
