Peguillyd’Herbemontwasbornon25thJune1888intoanoldFrenchnoblefamilyofthesamename.Inheryouthsheledtheconventionalandprotectedexistence,lackofgreatactivity,ofagirlfroma“goodfamily”,anexistenceremindingofthelifeofthearistocracy(贵族)beforetheFrenchRevolution.Shenevervisitedapublicschool,butwaseducatedbyGermanandEnglishgovernessesandnuns.HermovementswererestrictedandweremainlyconfinedtothefamilypositionsinParisandBelgium,butshespentmostofhertimeatthecastleofCharmoisnotfarfromVerdun.
