ThefounderofEarthDaywasGaylordNelson,aU.S.SenatorfromWisconsin.Duringthelate1960s,Americanswitnessedtheuninvitedsideeffectsofhighproductivity.FactoriesandpowerplantsweresendingoutsmokeandindustrialwastewhileAmericanswereusingpetrolfortheirmassive(大量的)cars,makingairpollutionalmostsynonymouswiththenation’sdevelopment.

On22ndApril1970,millionsofAmericanstooktothestreetandthousandsofstudentsmarchedtoappealforahealthy,sustainableenvironment.Therewasnowanewsynergy(协同作用)amongdifferentgroupswhichhadpreviouslybeenfightingtheircausesrelatedtotheenvironment.Theirfightforenvironmentalconservationbecamesooverwhelmingthataffectedbusinesseswereforcedtofollowenvironmentalstandardsiftheywantedtocontinuetheiroperations.
