1.IntroductiontoWindows
MicrosoftWindowsisasoftwaresystemthatworkshandinhandwithMSDOStocreatewhatiscommonlycalledagraphicaloperatingenvironment,orGraphicalUserInterface(GUI).Workingwithyourcomputerinthisenvironmentoffersmanyadvantagesoverworkingwith"normal"MSDOS.Herearesomeofthoseadvantages:
WindowsreplacestheDOScommandline,sothatyounolongerhavetodealwithdifficult-to-rememberDOScommands’InsteadoftypingattheDOSAorCprompttostartprograms,forexample,youcanstartthembyselectingeasilyrecognizablegraphicsymbols,calledicons.AndinsteadofhavingtolookupcommandsyntaxinaDOSmanualwhenyouwanttocopy,filesorchecktheamountoffreespaceonadisk,youcanperformthesefunctionswithWindowsdropdownofmenusanddialogboxes.Thesemenusanddialogboxesfreeyoufromconcerningaboutcommandsyntax.

FewcomputerusersrunMS-DOSorOS/2directly.TheypreferversionsofUNIXorwindowingsystemswithgraphicalinterfaces,suchasWindows98ortheMacintoshOS,whichmakecomputertechnologymoreaccessible.However,graphicalsystemsgenerallyhavethedisadvantageofrequiringmorehardware—suchasfasterCPUs,morememory,andhigher-qualitymonitors—thancommand-orientedoperatingsystems.
