BullyingandChildren

Whatyousonisdescribingisbullying,plainandsimple.Althoughitislateintheschoolyear,youshouldtakeactionbyreassuringyoursonthathedidnothingtobringthisonandthatyouwillhelphim.Manyparents,unfortunately,thinkthatbullyingandbeingbulliedareritesofpassage,somethingallkidsendureatsomepointintheirlivesjustlikesufferingthroughboringassembliesandbadcafeteriafood.Butbullyingisnot,andshouldnotbe,consideredanormalpartofgrowingup.

StudiesdoneinNorwayshowthatbullyingismostcommonintheyoungeragegroupsbutisstillpresenteveninthemid–teens.Thepercentofchildrenwhoarebulliedrangesfrom17%inthesecondgradetoabout5%intheninthgrade.ArecentsurveyintheUnitedStatesshowsthat10%ofchildrenreportedbeingbullied,13%reportedbeingabully,and6%reportedbeingbothbulliedandbeingthebully.Thissurveywaslimitedtosixththroughtenthgraders.

Whatisbullying?

Bullyinginvolvesintentionalandrepeatedactionsandwordsdesignedtointimidateorhurtanotherperson.Thereisusuallyanimbalanceofpower,eitherphysicalorpsychological,betweentheperpetratorandhisorhervictim.Occasionalnamecallingandshovingarenotconsideredbullyingbecausetheyareusuallynotrepetitiveevents.Ontheotherhand,ifachildisonthereceivingendofauntsandnamecallingbyanypersonsregularly,thenthatisconsideredbullying.Physicalaggression,socialalienation,verbalaggression,andintimidationarethefourmaincategoriesofbullying.

Manyparentsareshockedwhentheyfindouttheirchildhasbeenthevictimofabully,andafewparentsareshockedtofindoutthattheirchildhasbeenabully.Victimstendtobemorepassive,anxious,andinsecurethannon-victimsandtohavemorenegativeviewsofthemselves.Asmallpercentageofvictimsaretermed“provocative”becausetheyarebothanxiousandaggressive,oftenseekingtheattentionoftheperpetrator.

Thebullies,bycomparison,tendtobeaggressivechildrenandfrequentlylackempathyforothers.Bulliesusuallyhaveapositiveself-imageandadesiretobeincontrol.Thebullycherishespower.Thecherishedmythofthebullyasalonerwithapoorself-imageseekingtobolsterhisownself-worthbyattackingothersdidn’tholduptoscrutinyofscientificstudy.Ofcourse,therewillalwaysbevictimsandperpetratorswhodonotfittheseprofiles!

Anychildcanbeabully,andanychildcanbebulliedifthecircumstancesareright.

Althoughbullyingiscommon,studiesreportthatonlyhalfthechildrenreportwhatishappeningtoaparent,andevenfewertoateacher.Fewadultswitnesstheactsofthebullybecausemostaggressionoccursatschoolandplaceswherethereislittleoversightbyanadult.Theplayground,cafeteria,andrestroomsarecommonlocationsfortheperpetratortoact.

Childrenwhoarevictimsmaydevelopavarietyofvaguehealthcomplaintstoavoidgoingtoschoolorwhereverthebullyingistakingplace.Sometimesthiskindofschoolavoidancebehaviorcanbearedflagforparents,soaskyourchildifheorsheisbeingpickedonandbullied.
