DrAlanBeck,directorofPurdueUniversity’sCenterfortheHuman-AnimalBond,ledastudythatofferedroboticdogstoelderlypatientsatnursinghomes.Beckandhisstudentsfoundthat,justasonewouldexpectwithrealdogs,therobotsreducedfeelingsofloneliness,increasedphysicalandsocialactivities,andimprovedconfidence.

Therobot-dog,calledAIBO,wasdevelopedbySonyandproducedbetween1999and2006.ItwasthefirstrobottomakeitswayintothousandsofAmericanhomes.AIBOwasprogrammedto“learn”inalimitedwayfromitsenvironment.AttheUniversityofWashington,astudyofadultswhovisitedanAIBOwebsitesuggestedthatmanyownersbelieveAIBOexperiencedemotion(情感)eventhoughtheyknowthedogisarobot.AnotherstudyatPurduesuggestedthatkidsreactthesameway:

EvenveryyoungchildrenknowthatAIBOisnotarealdog,yetsomeformanemotionalattachmenttoit.

InaseparatestudyusingAIBOandadog,DrRebeccaJohnson,anursingprofessorandassociatedirectorattheCenterforAnimalWellness,MissouriUniversityCollage,foundsomeinterestingresults.Thestudycenteredonthesubjects’levelsofserotonin(血清素)—abrainchemicalthat,whendeficient(不足的),isstronglylinkedwithdepression.Findingsshowedthatserotoninincreasedwhentestsubjectsstayedwiththeirpetdogsbutdecreasedwhenthesubjectsstayedwithroboticdogs.

Thebenefitsofowningadog,then,arebecomingclear.Increasedlevelsofserotonincalmusdownandimprovesleepandcanmakeuslesssensitivetopain.Johnson’sstudyalsofoundthatpettingadogwillresultindecreasedlevelsofthebrainchemicalcortisol.
