BellaDePaulo,avisitingpsychologyprofessorattheUniversityofCalifornia,SantaBarbara,whoseworkfocusesonsinglepeopleandfriendships,notesthatinmanystudies,friendshiphasanevengreatereffectonhealththanaspouseorafamilymember.
Itisn’tentirelyclearwhyfriendshiphassuchabigeffect.Itmaybebecausepeoplewithstrongsocialtiesalsohavebetteraccesstohealthservicesandcare.Beyondthat,however,friendshipclearlyhasaprofoundpsychologicaleffect.Peoplewithstrongfriendshipsarelesslikelythanotherstogetcolds,perhapsbecausetheyhavelowerstresslevels.
Lastyear,researchersstudied34studentsattheUniversityofVirginia,takingthemtothebaseofasteephillandfittingthemwithaweightedbackpack.Theywerethenaskedtoestimatethesteepnessofthehill.Someparticipantsstoodnexttofriendsduringtheexercise,whileotherswerealone.
Thestudentswhostoodwithfriendsgavelowerestimatesofthesteepnessofthehill.Andthelongerthefriendshadknowneachother,thelesssteepthehillappeared.
