ANewToy

Iwaseightyearsoldwhenourneighborsacrossthehallgotatelevision.Itwasverysmallandveryexpensive,butthatdidn’tmatter.ITWASWONDERFUL.Everyoneinthebuildingcameuptothefifthfloortoseethislatestwonderofthemodernworld.Somepeople,theluckyones,stayedforawhileandgottowatchawholegrogram.Thatwasin1948.

Soonalotofpeoplegotnewtelevisions,butnotus.Myparentsdidn’tliketelevision.Theydidn’tthinkitwasgoodforchildren.Beingagooddocileson,Ididn’targuewiththem.ButIdidsecretlywatchtelevision–atmyfriends’homes.

By1955televisionsweren’tsoexpensiveandtheyweremuchlarger.Myparentsstillthoughttelevisionwasn’tgoodforus,butmysistersinsisted.Theysaidweweretheonlypeopleintheneighborhoodwhodidn’thaveone.Alltheirfriendstalkedaboutcertainprogramsandactors,butmysisterscouldn’t.Theirfriendslaughedatthem,andmysistersfeltwretched,veryunhappy.

Oneday,myyoungestsistercamefromschoolandstartedtocry.Shesaidshewasnevergoingbacktoschoolandthatlifewithouttelevisionwasn’tworthliving.Shecriedandsobbed.Myparents’usualargumentsonlymadehermoreinconsolable.Nothingtheysaidmadeherfeelanybetter.Well,whatcouldtheydo

Thenextmorning,withouttellingus,myparentswentoutandgotanewTV.Thatafternoonanantennawasputontheroof.Suzannecamehomefromschoolandranintothehouse.

“WhereisitWhereisit”Shecried.“Iknowit’shere.”Shewasbreathless,andhereyeswereshinywithexcitement.

“It’sinthelivingroom,”mymothersaidasmysisterranofftolookat,toadmire,thisbeautifulthingcalledatelevision.

Today,peoplestillargueaboutthevalueofTV.NobodycandenythepowerofTV.Ithasanenormous,averypowerful,influenceonourlives.Ontheaverage,Americansspend30hoursaweekwatchingTV.IsthisinfluencegoodorbadThisisanunanswerablequestionindeed:

Itishardenoughtomeasureinfluence;anditisevenhardertodecidewhatisgoodandwhatisn’t.Whatisgood,Isuppose,isthatmanypeopleareconcernedaboutTV’sinfluenceandthatwehavethepowertochangewhatwedon’tlike.
