accountspayable—Theamountacompanyowesforgoodsalreadyreceived.Notunlikeaperson’screditcardbalance;you’vegottheVCR,butyouhaven’ttakenthemoneyoutofthebankyet.

accountsreceivable—Theamountacompanyisowedforgoodsitsoldoncredit.

accrualmethodofaccounting—Usedformostcorporatefinancialstatements.Revenuesarecountedduringthetimethey’reearned,andexpensesarecountedduringthetimethey’reincurred.Cashdoesn’tneedtochangehandstoberecorded.Thisisafullerwayoflookingatfinancialhealth.It’sasifyoukeptrecordsnotjustofchecksyou’dwrittenanddepositsyoumade,butalsoofwhatyouowedonyourcreditcardsandwhatyouwereowedbyothers.Youcanfeelprettyrichifyourcheckingaccountisflush,butifyouowethousandsonyourcreditcardanddon’ttakethatintoaccount,youcanspendyourselfintotrouble.
