TheJamestownRediscoveryFoundationatHistoricJamestowneandtheSmithsonian’sMuseumofNaturalHistoryannouncedthatthesettlersheldhighleadershippositions.Themen,Rev.RobertHunt,Capt.GabrielArcher,SirFerdinandoWainman,andCapt.WilliamWest,alplayedaroleintheJamestownsettlement.Afterbeinglosttohistoryformorethan400years,thediscoveryoftheirremainsprovidesnewcluesabouttheirlifeandtheimportanceofreligioninthe1600s.
“Thisisaveryimportantdiscovery,”JamestownRediscoveryFoundationPresidentJamesHornsaidinastatement.“ThesemenwereamongthefirstfoundersofEnglishAmerica.”
About100peoplesettledalongtheJamesRiverinwhatwouldbecomethefirstEnglishsettlementin1607.Duringthattime,settlersinJamestownwerefacedwithfamine(饥荒)anddisease.ThecolonywasnearlywipedoutduetotheconflictwithNativeAmericansintheareaandwithotherEnglishsettlers.
