ThebasiccomputermouseisanamazinglycleverinventionwitharelativelysimpledesignthatallowsUStopointatthingsonthecomputeranditisveryproductive.Thinkofallthethingsyoucandowithamouselikeselectingtextforcopyingandpasting,drawing,andevenscrollingonthepagewiththenewermicewiththewheel.MostofUSusethecomputermousedailywithoutstoppingtothinkhowitworksuntilitgetsdirtyandwehavetolearnhowtocleanit.Welearntopointatthingsbeforewelearntospeak,Sothemouseisaverynaturalpointingdevice.Othercomputerpointingdevicesincludelightpens,graphicstabletsandtouchscreens,butthemouseisstillourworkhorse.

wehavetostartatthebottom,sothinkupsidedownfornow.Itallstartswiththemouseball.Asmemouseballinthebottomofthemouserollsoverthemousepad,itpressesagainstandturnstwoshafts.Theshaftsareconnectedtowheelswithseveralsmallholesinthem.Thewheelshaveapairofsmallelectroniclight—emittingdevicescalledlight—emittingdiodes(LED)mountedoneitherside.OneLEDsendsalightbeamtotheLEDontheotherside.Asthewheelsspinandaholerotatesby,thelightbeamgetsthroughtotheLEDontheotherside.Butamomentlaterthelightbeamisblockeduntilthenextholeisinplace.TheLEDdetectachangingpatternoffight,convertsthepatternintoanelectronicsignal,andsendsthesignaltothecomputerthroughwiresinacablethatgoesoutofthemousebody.Thiscableisthetailthathelpsgivethemouseitsname.ThecomputerinterpretsthesignaltotellitwheretopositiontheCursoronthecomputerscreen.
