Theparticipantswerefollowedforupto17years.Attheendofthestudy,164peoplehaddevelopeddementiawith136specificallydiagnosed(诊断)withAlzheimer'sdisease.Nearly22percentofpeoplewhoweredepressedatthestartofthestudydevelopeddementiacomparedtoabout17percentofthosewhowerenotdepressed.The10-yearabsoluteriskfordementiawas0.21inpeoplewithoutdepressivesymptomsand0.34inpeoplewithdepressivesymptoms.Theresultswerethesameregardlessofaperson'sage,sex,educationandwhethertheyhadtheAPOEgene(基因)thatincreasesaperson'sriskofAlzheimer'sdisease.
