AtuniversityIjoinedtheMountaineeringClubandwasabletoclimbmuchmorefrequently.Wehadregulartripstoindoorwallsandweekendsawayoutdoors.IdevelopedagreatcircleofclimbingfriendsandwentonseveraltripstoEurope.AftertheseIstartedAlpineclimbingandiceclimbing,too.

WhenmysightdroppedtoalevelwhereIcouldnolongerread,IthoughtImighthavetogiveupleading.ButIneverthoughtIwouldstopclimbing.Ijustlearnttoadaptwiththesupportofmyfriends.

Peopleoftenaskme,“Whyrockclimbing?

Itdoesn’tseemlikeagoodactivityforablindperson.”

ButwhenIthinkaboutthedanger,crossingtheroadisfarmoredangerous,andalso,it’ssomethingwhereI’mnotincontrol.

AstudypublishedinthejournalCurrentBiologyshowsthatthehabitofsleepinginonweekendsdoesn’tfixthedamagethathasbeendonebyalackofsleepduringtheweek.Evenworse,itmaydamageyourhealth.

Inthestudy,whichwasconductedover10days,36healthyyoungmenandwomenwithdifferentsleeprequirementsweredividedintothreegroups.Thefirstgroupwereaskedtosleepninehoursanightandthesecondgroupfivehoursanight.Themembersofthethirdgroupsleptforfivehoursonweekdaysbutrestedaslongastheywantedontheweekend.

Theresearchersfoundthatpeoplewholackedsleepatemoresnacksandgainedweightquickly.However,thiswasn’tthecaseforthefirstgroup.

Thatcouldbepartiallyduetotheshiftingofthebiologicalclockandchangestocertainbodyhormones,especiallyhungerhormones.Inordertocatchupontheirsleepduringweekends,peopleinthethirdgroupwouldeatlaterasahabit.Sotheirbiologicalclocksshifted,whichalsochangedtheproductionofhungerhormones.

“Thehormoneleptin(瘦素)decreasesappetite(胃口),whilethehormoneghrelin(饿素)increasesappetite,”explainedUSresearcherVsevolodPolotsky.“Sleepshortagecausesleptintodropandghrelintorise,soyou’rehungryandeatmore.”

Andeveniftheytriedtosleepforaslongastheywantedtoduringweekends,accordingtoresearchers,itwasstillnotenoughbecausetheyfounditdifficulttofallasleep.

Moreover,shortandinsufficientsleepscheduleswillleadtoaninabilitytochangebloodsugarandincreasetheriskofmetabolic(新陈代谢)diseaseinthelongterm.

It’sdifficulttoimaginethegreatinfluencethosesatelliteshaveonourdailylives.WhenyouunlockoneofHellobike’sbicycles,youareusingtheBDS.“TheintelligentlockoneachbikereceivesBeidousatellitesignalsandsendspositioninginformationtothedatacenterwhichwillhelpcollectbigdataonthebikesandpredictusers’ridingneedsinadvanceaccordingtothedata,”ChuYiqun,amanagerofHellobikementioned.Userscanalsofindsharedbikesmoreaccurately(精确地)thankstoBeidou’sglobalpositioningaccuracyof2.34meters.

Beidouadoptsauniquetwo-waycommunicationsystem,includingitsabilitytoreceivemessagessentbypeoplefromareaswithpoorcommunicationsignals.Obviouslythisfunctionisn’tdesignedforuserstochatonline.Instead,itplaysarolewhendisastersoccurandcommunicationsareblocked.

AftertheWenchuanEarthquakein2008,allground-basedcommunicationfacilitieswereinterrupted.ThoughthefirstgenerationofBeidoucouldonlysend120charactersinasinglemessageatthattime,communicationbetweenaffectedareasandrescue(救援)centerswassuccessful.Now,Beidou’smessagingabilityhasbeenincreasedto1,200Chinesecharactersinasinglemessage.Itiswidelyusedindisasteralarms,automaticidentificationandinformationrelease.
