Thismanistheworldfamouswriter,GabrielGarciaMarquez.

GabrielGarciaMarquezwasbornonMarch6,1928.Duringhisearlylife,GarciaMarquez’sgrandmotherandgrandfathertoldhimmanystories.Hisgrandmotherwouldtellhimlegendsasiftheywerereal.GarciaMarquezsaysthathisgrandmother’swayofstorytellinglaterinfluencedhisownmethods.

WhenGarciaMarquezwasabout20yearsold,heleftAracatacaandattendeduniversityinBogota.Hebeganstudyinglawbecausethiswaswhathisfatherwantedhimtostudy.However,GarciaMarquezwasnothappy.

DuringthistimeGarciaMarquezreturnedtoAracataca.Itwasonthisvisitthatherealizedhemuststopstudyinglaw.Andherecognizedthathemustreturntothedreamofhischildhood—writing.Forthenextfewyears,GarciaMarquezwroteformanydifferentnewspapers.Andin1955,hepublishedhisfirstbookcalledLeafStorm.

Formanyyears,GarciaMarquezknewhewantedtowriteabouthisgrandfather’shouseinAracataca.Towritethisbook,GarciaMarquezandhiswifehadtosellalmostalloftheirpossessionstosurvive.Buttheiractwasworthit.Thebook,OneHundredYearsofSolitudewasimmediatelysuccessful.AndthisbookcreatedapathforGarciaMarquez’sfuturesuccess.

In1982,GabrielGarciaMarquezwasgiventheNobelPrizeinLiteratureforhisbookOneHundredYearsofSolitude,makinghimthefirstColombianandthefourthLatinAmericantowinaNobelPrizeinLiterature.

ThepublicnicknamedtheanimalHappyFeet.ResearchersstartedtonoticethatHappyFeetdidn’tseemwell.Itturnsoutthathehadbeeneatingthesandfromthebeach,likelythinkingitwassnow.

Thepublicraisedmorethan11,000poundsforanoperationtogetthesandoutofhisstomach.Theoperationwasasuccess,andHappyFeetwastakentoazooinWellington,N.Z.AgroupofexpertsmettodecidehowtohelpHappyFeetreturntothewild.
