Ourmodernworkinglivesareruledbytheconceptofcompetence.Theideathatliesbehindcompetenceisquitesimple:

Humansdonotlearnorworkinwaysthatcanbemeasuredbytheconceptofcompetence.Taketheexampleofabarista(咖啡师)whoisbeingtrainedtomakecoffee.Thejobtitleof“barista”suggestsadegreeofskillinmakingcoffee.However,baristasinlargecoffeechainsareusuallytrainedthroughcompetence-basedqualifications.Onepartofthesequalificationsistoproduceacupofcoffeetomeetaminimumstandard.Itmighthavetoachieveacertaintasteandappearance.Thismightseemperfectlyreasonable,buttherearetworeasonswhysuchanapproachtotrainingbaristasdoesnotwork.

Yetweareincreasinglyforcedtoachievecompetenceinourschoolsandworkplaces.Wearenotemptymachinesthatsimplyproducebinaryoutcomes.Ifwewanttobetruehumaninourlearningandourworkplaces,weneedtobecreativeandspecial.Learningandinnovation(创新)involvefailureinaimingforsomethingthatisunusuallygood.Suchthingssimplycannotbejudgedbythestandardofcompetencewherethemediocreisthegoldstandard.
