OpticsExpresshasmadesignificantchangestoitsproductionprocessbycreatingarchival-qualityXMLalongwiththePDFoutput.XMListheindustrystandardforproducingandarchivingscientificjournalarticlesandisusedinproducingallotherOSAjournals.Havingfull-textXMLwillallowOpticsExpresstobeindexedmoreaccuratelyandcompletelyinMEDLINE,PubMedCentral,andotherdatabases;itwillalsoallowthejournaltomeetitsarchivalobligationsandtopreparefornewservicessuchasfull-textsemanticsearchandrepurposingofcontent.

Inordertopreventdelaysinproduction,weaskthatauthorscarefullyadheretothefollowingnewguidelines:

∙WordandLaTeX.OSAacceptsWordandLaTeXsubmissions;however,weencourageauthorstosubmitpapersinMSWord.OSAwillnotpublishthesameWordfilethatauthorssubmitfortheirfinalrevisions,soitisimperativethatauthorscarefullycheckthefinalversionoftheirpaperbeforepayingthepublicationfee.OSAusesaWordplug-incalledeXtylestonormalize,format,tag,andparsethefileintofull-textXML.eXtylesautomaticallyreformats,checks,andupdatesthereferencesagainsttheCrossRefandPubMeddatabases.Inadditiontorunningotherauto-redacteditingrules,eXtyleschecksallreference,figure,tableandequationcalloutsinthetexttoensureallitemsarecited.Atthistimefull-textXMLwillbegeneratedfromLaTeXpapersafterpublication.

∙Authorlisting.Allauthorsmustbegroupedtogetherusingsuperscriptstocallouteachaffiliation.Hardreturns（Enterkey）mustbeusedtoseparateeachindividualaffiliation.Soft-returns（Shift+Enterkey）shouldbeuseforlinebreakswithinasingleparagraph.

∙Maintext.AuthorsmustidentifyequationsandfiguresinthetextbyinsertingFig.orEq.beforethenumber.Allreferences,figures,andtablesmustbecalledoutinthetext.

∙Figures.Authorsmustuseoneimagefileperfigure.Figuresneedtobeinsertedasobjectsthatarefixedandmovewiththetext,notasfloatingobjects.Figuresshouldneverbeplacedinatableenvironment.

∙Tables.AuthorsmustuseWord’sTableeditortoinserttables.AuthorsmustnotimporttablesfromExcel.AllcontentforeachtableshouldbeinasingleWordtable（donotsplitcontentforasingletableacrossmultipleWordtables）.

∙Equations.OSAdoesnotacceptequationsbuiltusingtheWord2007EquationBuilder.AllequationsshouldbecreatedinMathType（ortheMicrosoftEquationeditorfromDesignScience）.SeeInstructionsforUsersofWord2007/DOCXfordetails.WestronglyencourageauthorstouseMathType6.5.NotethatLaTeXuserscantypeLaTeXcodedirectlyintoMathTypeforrenderinginWord.

PapersizeshouldbeU.S.Letter,21.505cmx27.83cm（8.5in.x11in.）.Theprintingareashouldbesetto13.28cmx21.54cm（5.25in.x8.5in.）;marginsshouldbesetfora2.54-cm（1in.）topand4.11-cm（1.625in.）left,right,andbottom.

Tomaintainarapidpublicationcycle,therecommendedpagelengthforanOpticsExpressarticleis6pages.Higherpublicationfeesapplytoarticles7-15pagesinlength.Thereisanadditionalfeeformanuscriptslongerthan15pages.

OpticsExpressacceptsWordandTeXfiles.OSAstronglyencouragesauthorstosubmitpapersinMSWordratherthaninLaTeX.

4.Typographicalstyle

AllfontsfortextshouldbesomeversionofTimesNewRoman.Textshouldbe10-pt.,thetitleshouldbe18-pt.,andtheaffiliationandreferencesshouldbe8-pt.Donotaddhyphenationattheendofaline.

4.1Title

Centerthetitle.Thetitleshouldbein18-pt.boldfont.Useinitialcapforfirstwordintitleorforpropernouns.Uselowercasefollowingcolon.Titleshouldnotbeginwithanarticleorcontainthewords"first,""new"or"novel."

4.2Authorname

Centerauthornamesin10-pt.boldfont.Authornamesshouldappearasusedforconventionalpublication,withfirstandmiddlenamesorinitialsfollowedbysurname.EveryeffortshouldbemadetokeepauthornamesconsistentfromonepapertothenextastheyappearwithinOSApublications.

4.3Authoraffiliation
