  BackgroundoftheStudy

  Chinaplaysamuchmoreimportantroleinworldeconomicsystemalongwiththedevelopmentofeconomicglobalization.Economicglobalizationnotonlyacceleratesourcountry'seconomicgrowth,butalsopromotesthespeedofinternationaltradeallovertheworld.Thereforeexcellentbusinesscommunicationcompetencebecomesincreasinglyimportantaswell.AsoneofthelanguagemediabusinessEnglishcorrespondenceaimstolinkoverseasanddomesticeconomicentities,exchangeinformation,communicatewitheachotheranddealwithbusiness.Itplaysanextremelyimportantroleinthefrequentinternationaltrade.Itisnoexaggerationtosay,businessEnglishcorrespondenceisusedineverystepofbusinessactivities.

  ThecourseofbusinessEnglishwritinghasalmostexpandedintoeveryuniversity foreignanddomesticscholarshavedoneresearchesonbusinessEnglishcorrespondencefromtheperspectiveoflexicon,semanticfields,especiallybasedoncorpus.Therearetwomajorlarge-scalecorporaonbusinessEnglish.OneisNelson'sBusinessEnglishCorpus(BECforshort)accountingforonemillionwords.TheotheroneisPolyUBusinessCorporaconstructedbyHongKongPolytechnicUniversity.ThePolyUBusinessCorporaaremadeupofthreecomparablecorporaofChinese,EnglishandJapanesebusinesstexts,themajorityofwhichoriginatefromthebusinessandfinancesectionsofnewspaperswritteninthoselanguages,coveringnewsandreportsfromauditingandaccountingtoinsuranceandinvestments.Eachofthecorporahasmorethanonemillionwords.ItisaccessibleonlineforsearchingkeywordstoseeaconcordancetakenfromPolyUBusinessEnglishcorpus,whichishelpfultostudentsandteachers.ItisthusobviouslythatbusinessEnglishisquiteimportantsothatattractsmuchattentionfromlinguisticresearchers.Ithasbeenanoverridingaimofthisprojecttocreatearesourceforresearcherstohelpfurtherknowledgeofanareawhichsofarhasbeentheresearchtopicofmanyscholars.

  SignificanceoftheStudy

  ThisthesismakesarelativelycompletestudyofbusinessEnglishcorrespondencefromtheperspectiveoflexicalgrammartheoryandsyntactictheory.IttakesupbusinessEnglishcorrespondenceasitsresearchtopicandaimstoproposesomefeasiblestrategiesinbusinessEnglishcorrespondencewritingandteaching.Thestudyexpectedtoachieveboththeoreticalandpracticalsignificanceasfollows:

  Firstofall,thisstudywillintroduceanewresearchmethod.Corpusprovidesabrandnewwayforthestudyoflanguage.Itbreaksthroughthetraditionalmethodofintuitiveexperiencemethodandturnstotheoriginalanalysisofnaturallanguageinordertoprovideafirmfoundationanddatasupportforlanguageresearchinvariousfields.Traditionalintuitiveexperiencemethodfocusesonpersonalexperienceandintuition,manualmethodsorintrospectivemethodwhichcouldacquirelinguisticknowledgeonlyfromlimiteddataoflanguagematerials.Thismethodofacquiringlinguisticknowledgeisnotonlyinefficiencybutalsomoresubjectivewhichinevitablyleadsaeffectontheaccuracyoffinalresult.However,corpus-basedapproachistotally canfindthetargetdataquicklybyusingcomputersoftwareforscientificanalysis,andovercomethelimitationoftraditionalresearchonthesubjectivityandone-sidedness.Thismacroscopicmethodcancarryonamulti-levelandall-roundedresearchonthebasisofalargenumberofrealdata,andeffectivelypromotethenewtheoreticalmodelandresearchparadigm.Italsoreliesoncomputersciencetoachieveitspowerfulfunctioninlanguagesearching,andprovidesanewmethodinlinguisticresearchforthemajorityoflanguageresearchers.

  Secondly,aclearunderstandingoflexicalgrammartheorycouldbeachieved.Languageisatoolforhumancommunicationwhichinevitablycannotdowithoutmeaningexpressionandunderstanding.Sinclairbrokethepreviousrulesofdescribingvocabularyandgrammarinaseparateway.Therefore,anewpointofviewhasbeenproposed.Thatislanguageshouldbedescribedbyusingthewaycombiningvocabularyandgrammarwhichopenedupanewpathforlanguagedescriptionbasedonacorpus.Thenheproposedlexicalgrammar,andbelievedthatvocabularyandgrammarareequallyimportant,inwhichvocabularyisthestartingpointforbuildingthelanguagemodel.ThekeyaspectsabouttheoriginoflexicalgrammarandthewholenessoflexisandgrammarwillbediscussedindetailinnextchapterandthisstudyisbasedonthetheoryoflexicalgrammartoexplorethefeaturesofbusinessEnglishcorrespondencefromlexicalandsyntacticlevels.

  Thirdly,afterarelativelycompletestudyonthebusinessEnglishcorrespondence,typicallexicalandsyntacticfeaturescouldbeworkedout.

  Fourthly,feasiblestrategiescouldbeproposedtobusinessEnglishcorrespondencewritingandteaching.

  LayoutoftheThesis

  Inthisthesis,thestudywilldosomeresearchonbusinessEnglishcorrespondenceandmanagetosummarizesomecommonsyntacticfeaturesofbusinessEnglishcorrespondencebasedonlexical-grammartheoryandsyntactictheory.Thisthesisisdividedintothefollowingsixparts:

  Chapter1,theintroductionpartisanintroductionconcerningthethemeofthethesis,includingageneralintroductionofthebackgroundandsignificanceofthestudyandtheorganizationofthewholethesis.

  Chapter2,aliteraturereviewisprovidedinthischapter,whichgivesoutanoverviewofthecorpuslinguisticsandbusinessEnglishcorrespondence.ItfirstintroducesbusinessEnglishcorrespondenceandcorpuslinguisticsbriefly,andthengivesacomprehensiveintroductiontothemwhicharealsodiscussedhereforbetterunderstandingtothefieldthatthetheorywillbeappliedto.RelevantstudiesbothonCorpuslinguisticsandbusinessEnglishcorrespondencearealsopresentedattheendofeachpart.

  Chapter3introducesthetheoreticalframeworkwhichcontainsfourmainparts:

principlesofbusinessEnglishcorrespondence,theapplicationincorpuslinguistics,lexicalgrammarandsyntactictheory.ThenSinclair'slexicalgrammartheoryandsyntactictheorywillbediscussedindetail.Intheendofthischapter,thewriterwilltalkaboutthepaper'sfeasibility.

  Chapter4addressestheresearchmethodologyofthestudywhichincludesthecorpus-basedquantitativeandqualitativemethod,thecorpusandinstrumentsusedinthestudy,theproceduresofthestudybothinrelationtodatacollectionanddataprocessingandconcordance.

  Chapter5isthemainpartofthethesisofwhichlexicalandsyntacticfeatureswillbediscussedandanalyzedinthispart.Wordlength,sentencelength,wordlistandsomeotherwordfrequencywillbelistedandanalyzedindetail.

  Chapter6drawsaconclusionofthethesis,whichgivesasummarytothewhole themajorfindingsofthestudy,italsopointsoutthelimitationsanddifficultiesofthepresentstudy.
