hi,everybody.onbehalfofalltheobamas–michelle,malia,sasha,bo,andthenewestmemberofourfamily,sunny–iwanttowishyouahappyandhealthythanksgiving.

we’llbespendingtodayjustlikemanyofyou–sittingdownwithfamilyandfriendstoeatsomegoodfood,tellsomestories,watchalittlefootball,andmostimportantly,countourblessings.

andasamericans,wehavesomuchtobethankfulfor.

wegivethanksforthemenandwomenwhosetsailforthislandnearlyfourcenturiesago,riskingeverythingforthechanceatabetterlife–andthepeoplewhowerealreadyhere,ournativeamericanbrothersandsisters,fortheirgenerosityduringthatfirstthanksgiving.

wegivethanksforthegenerationswhofollowed–peopleofallracesandreligions,whoarrivedherefromeverycountryonearthandworkedtobuildsomethingbetterforthemselvesandforus.

wegivethanksforallourmenandwomeninuniform–andfortheirfamilies,whoaresurelymissingthemverymuchtoday.we’regratefulfortheirsacrificetoo.

wegivethanksforthefreedomstheydefend–thefreedomtothinkwhatwewantandsaywhatwethink,toworshipaccordingtoourownbeliefs,tochooseourleadersand,yes,criticizethemwithoutpunishment.peoplearoundtheworldarefightingandevendyingfortheirchanceatthesefreedoms.westandwiththeminthatstruggle,andwegivethanksforbeingfree.

andwegivethankstoeveryonewho’sdoingtheirparttomaketheunitedstatesabetter,morecompassionatenation–whospendtheirthanksgivingvolunteeringatasoupkitchen,orjoiningaserviceproject,orbringingfoodandcheertoalonelyneighbor.thatbig-heartedgenerosityisacentralpartofouramericancharacter.webelieveinlendingahandtofolkswhoneedit.webelieveinpitchingintosolveproblemseveniftheyaren’tourproblems.andthat’snotaone-day-a-yearbelief.it’spartofthefabricofournation.

andwerememberthatmanyamericansneedthathelpinghandrightnow.americanswho’velosttheirjobsandcan’tgetanewonethroughnofaultoftheirown.americanswho’vebeentrappedinpovertyandjustneedthathelpinghandtoclimbout.citizenswhoseprayersandhopesmoveustoact.

weareapeoplewhoaregreatertogetherthanweareonourown.that’swhattodayisabout.that’swhateverydayshouldbeabout.nomatterourdifferences,we’reallpartofoneamericanfamily.weareeachother’skeeper.weareonenation,undergod.thatcoretenetofouramericanexperiencehasguidedusfromtheearliestdaysofourfounding–anditwillguideustoafuturethat’sevenbrighterthantoday.

thankyou,godblessyou,andfrommyfamilytoyours,happythanksgiving.
