Theyareknownasmotorhomes-literallykitchens,livingrooms,andbedsonthemoveacrossAmerica.Therearemorethan1.5millionoftheseself-propelledrollingdwellingsintheUnitedStates.Theyrangefromsimplepick-uptruckswithcamperunitsattachedtodeluxerecreationalvehicles-orRVs-asbigasamovingvan.

Sinceamotorhomevacationisoftencheaperthanatriprequiringstaysathotelsandresorts,onemightthinktheRVindustryisthriving,despitethelongestanddeepestrecessionsincethe1930s.Butnotso.About62,000newmotorhomesrolledoutofdealershipsin2004,butjustone-thirdthatmanyweresoldlastyear.Ordersareupearlythisyear,however,asconsumercreditloosenssomewhat.

Outwest,especially,wherethereareplentyofcampgroundsandnationalparks,youseethousandsofmotorhomes.Theirownershaveclubs,magazines,anationalassociation-evenconventions,twiceayear!

Theyarewarmlywelcomedinmostplaces,becausetheyareoftenretiredcoupleswhohavemoneytospend,teacherswithanentiresummeravailablefortravel,orwell-behavedfamiliesonvacation.Manymotorhomeownershavedriventoall50U.S.states-except,ofcourse,Hawaii,wayoutinthePacificOcean.

Oftenneighborstakeseveraltripstogethereachyear,sharinggasolinecosts,home-cookedmeals-nottomentionlaughsandmemories.EvenwithpoorgasmileageonmostRVunits,thesevagabondscantravelforaboutone-fifthwhatotherspaywhofly,buymealsinrestaurants,andstayinmotels.

Andwhiledriversandpassengersalikeinlargemotorhomesaresupposedtokeeptheirseatbeltsfastenedontheroad,it'snotuncommontofindsomeoneinbackreachingforcoldrefreshments,spreadingmapsoutonatable-eventakinganap,fullyreclined!
