Howdidyoustarttobecomeinterestedingraphology?

Denise:

I'vealwaysbeenfascinatedbypeopleandwhattheyarelike,andthenonedayIwasjustlookingatabookaboutdifferentstylesofhandwritingandIgottothinkingthatitmustallmeansomething,becauseweallhaveadifferentandindividualstyleofourown.Sothat'showIbegan.

Leo:

Whatexactlyistheconnectionbetweenthewaywewriteandthewayweare?

Denise:

Ifyouthinkaboutit,ourhandwriting,andourdoodlingtoo,areallproductsofourbrain—akindofextensionofourselvesonpaper,so,consciouslyorunconsciously,wearegivingakindof'computerprintout'ofwhatwethinkorfeelwhenwewrite.Asthebrainiswhereourthoughtsandfeelingslie,thereiseveryreasontoassumethatourcharacteristransmittedintoourhandwriting.

Leo:

NowIknowthatanumberofEuropeanfirmshaveusedgraphologytoevaluatepotentialemployeesforsometimenow,butIbelieveit'scatchingoninAmericatoo.

Denise:

I'mnowrunningmyownSanFrancisco-basedconsultancyfirm,whichIstartedadecadeago,andnowovertwohundredfirmscometomeforadviceonwould-beemployees.

Leo:

Howdoesitworkout,then?

Denise:

Yes,mostcompaniesnowadaysrequiretheirnewjobapplicantstoprovideatleastaone-pagewritingsamplewhichisthenpassedovertomeforinterpretation.

Leo:

Howlongdoesittakeyoutoanalyseasample?

Denise:

Oh,anythingfromthreetoeighthours,dependingontheamountofdetailrequiredbytheclient.

Leo:

Andwhatcanyoutellfromthesampleyouget?

Denise:

Awholerangeofpersonalitytraitscanbeassessed,suchasenthusiasm,ambition,imagination,diligence,sincerity,secretiveness—justabouteverything,infact.

Leo:

Canyougiveussometell-talecluesaboutthewaywewrite?

I'msureourlistenerswillallbedyingtohearsomething.

Denise:

OK,youjustwritetheletter't',notacapitalbutanordinary't',please,Leo.

Leo:

Allright.Thereyouare.Nowwhatcanyoutellmefromthat?

Denise:

Mmm...well,the't'you'vewritten,whichismoreorlessstraightupandcrossedwithadiagonalstrokefromsouth-westtonorth-east,asitwere,indicatesanoptimistickindofcharactertome.Wouldyoudescribeyourselfinthatway?

Leo:

Mmm,yes,Ithinkso.Canyoudescribeanyotherkindsof't'forthebenefitofourlisteners?

Denise:

Leo:

Denise:

Mostpeopledoitbecausetheyarebored,butsomedoitmorethanothers.Creativepeoplelikearchitectsorfashiondesignersdoagreatdealofaimlessdoodling,whereaswriters,ontheotherhand,doverylittlebecausetheyhaveawayofexpressingthemselvesinwords.Ithinkprobablypeoplewithdisabilitiesarethebestdoodlers,becausetheirnormaloutletsareblocked.

Leo:

Whataboutactualwritingimplements,doesitmakeanydifferencewhatyouchoosetowritewith?

Denise:

Indeed,yes.Ifyougivepeopleachoiceofwritingimplements—sayapencil,afelttiporanordinarypen—themiddle-of-the-roaderswillgofortheordinarypen,thosewhowanttoleavethebiggestimpressionwiththeleastamountofworkwilltakethefelttip.Asforpencils,Iwon'tsayit'strueineverycase,somepencilusersaren'tveryhonest;pencilscanbeerased,yousee,soit'sawayofleavingnotraces.Criminalswillalmostalwayschooseapencil,althoughofcourseI'mnotsuggestingthatallpencilusersarecriminals,ofcourse.
