Inamorerecentstudy,Berningerlookedatwhatrolespellingplaysinastudent’swritingskillsandfoundthathowwellchildrenspellistiedtohowwelltheycanwrite.“Spellingmakessomeofthethinkingpartsofthebrainactivewhichhelpsusaccessourvocabulary,wordmeaningandconcepts.Itisallowingourwrittenlanguagetoconnectwithideas.”Berningersaid.

Spellinghelpsstudentstranslateideasintowordsintheirmindfirstandthentotranscribe(转换)“thosewordsinthemindwrittensymbolsonpaperorkeyboardandscreen,”thestudysaid.Seeingthewordsinthe“mind’seye”helpschildrennotonlytoturntheirideasintowords,saysBerninger,butalsotospot(发现)spellingmistakeswhentheywritethewordsdownandtocorrectthemovertime.

“Inourcomputerage,somepeoplebelievethatwedon’thavetoteachspellingbecausewehavespellchecks,”shesaid.“Butuntilachildhasafunctionalspellingabilityofaboutafifthgradelevel,theywon’thavetheknowledgetochoosethecorrectspellingamongtheoptionsgivenbythecomputer.”
