laptops).However,thisisaconnectiontheoryandsuchclaimshavebeentreatedskepticallybysomescholarsbasedontheirreadingoftherelevantdata.
[B]NowastudyinthejournalEmotionhasprovidedanothercontributiontothedebate,
uncoveringstrongevideneethatadolescentwellbeingintheUnitedStatesreallyisexperiencingadeclineandarguingthatthemostlikelycauseistheelectronicricheswehavegiventhem.Thebackgroundtothisisthatfromthe1960sintotheearly2000s,measuresof
averagewellbeingwentupintheUS.Thiswasespeciallytrueforyoungerpeople.Itreflectedthefactthatthesedecadessawaclimbingeneralstandardsoflivingandavoidaneeofmass
societaltraumaslikefull-scalewaroreconomicdeprivation.However,the“screentime”
hypothesis,advaneedbyresearcherssuchasJeanTwenge,isthatelectronicdevicesand
excessivetimespentonlinemayhavereversedthesetrendsinrecentyears,causingproblems
foryoungpeople'spsychologicalhealth.

basedonannualsurveysofAmericanschoolstudentsfromgrades8,10,and12thatstarted
in1991.Intotal,millionyoungpeopleansweredvariousquestionsrelatedtotheirwellbeing.Twenge'steam'sanalysisoftheanswersconfirmedtheearlier,well-establishedwellbeing
climb,withscoresrisingacrossthe1990s,andintothelater2000s.Thiswasfoundacrossmeasureslikeself-esteem,lifesatisfaction,happinessandsatisfactionwithindividualdomainslikejob,neighborhood,orfriends.Butaround2012thesemeasuresstartedtodecline.
