In490B.C.theGreekmessenger,Pheidippides,ranabout40kilometersfromthetownof“Marathon”toAthenstoannouncethevictoryofAthensoverMacedon.Sincethen,the42–kilometer“Marathon”racehasbecomeagreattestforathletes.However,formanyyears,onlymenwereallowedtorunthisrace,becausethedistancewassaidtobeunbearableforwomen.In1966,anAmericanwomennamedRobertaGibbprovedthatideawrong.
Gibbhadalwaysenjoyedrunning.Onedayin1964,shesawtheBostonMarathonhappeningasshewasrunninginthewoods.Sincerunningmeantalottoher,shebegantrainingharder,hopingtojointhemarathonsomeday.
Gibbfinallyappliedtoruninthe1966BostonMarathon,butshewasnotgivenentrancebecausetheBostonMarathonAssociationconsideredthatwomenwerenotstrongenoughtorun42kilometers.Yet,thiswasnoobstacletoGibb,forsheknewshehadthephysicalandmentalstrengthtocompletetherace.Onthedaythe1966BostonMarathonwasheld,Gibbhidinthebushesandjumpedintotheracewhenitbegan.Shefinishedtheracein3hoursand21minutes,defeatingtwothirdsofthemenintheraceandprovingthatwomencouldrunthemarathon.
