ExecutiveSummary

ThepurposeofthereportistoexploretheimplicationsofPinterestbusinessmodeunderthenewtechnologyaswellasitsadvantages.Inordertotakeadvantageoffromothercompanies,Pinterestbuildsuprelationshipsandmakescooperationwithothercompanies.Pinterestneedstofocusonsomeaspectsandmakefulluseofsocialtools.Thisreportwillfollowconceptsandnotionspresentedinthegivenarticle,titled‘Pinterest’.Thisreportwillexplorethebusinessmodelintermsoftheupside(gains)orthedownside(risks).ItcanbeconcludedthatitwillbegoodtooptimizethebusinessmodelbymeansofPinterestbusinessmodel.

AccordingtoColao(2012),learningfromechCrunchandtheWallStreetJournal,Pinterestwantstotakeadvantageoftheusethepartnershiptostrengthenitse-commercestrategyandaccelerateinternationalgrowthbyintegratingthebuyerIDsandpaymentinformationofRakuten's80millioncustomersintothewebsite(Colao2012).Throughexplainingthebusinessmodelbasedontherisksandgains,itwillmakeafullunderstandingofPinterest.

Pinterest,alsoknownas‘pinning’,isa“virtualpinboard”wherepeoplecancollect,organizeandsharethethingstheydiscoverontheWeb(Miller2012).ThenameofPinterestisthecombinationofthewordpinandinterest.Themeaningofitisthatyoucanpinwhateveryouwantandwhatyouareinterestedinonthepinboard.Inaddition,ithasacreativefunctionthattheusersdonotneedtoturntoanewpageatthebottomofthewebpage.Thenewpictureswillcomeoutautomatically,ifusersgodownthewebpage.Pinterestuserscanuploadtheirimagesfromcomputersororganizetheirfindingsintoself-categorizedimageboardbyusingthePinterestbookmarklet,pinitbutton,orjustaURL(Melanie,2011).ItisabrandnewsocialnetworkfoundedbyAmericain2011andgrewrapidlyoverthepastfewmonths.Inthecurrent,ithasalreadybecomethetoptenhottestsocialnetworkwebsiteallovertheworld.

2.2AdvantagesofPinterest

AccordingtoJessyandAlex(2012),theusersofPinterestcancollectandshareimagesondigitalpinboards.InFebruary2012,PinteresthasalreadysurpasseditscompetitorslikethesocialnetworksGoogle+,LinkedIn,Twitter,andYouTubecombined.Pinterestisgrowinginpopularityasthehottestsocialnetworkinsuchashorttime.There’snodoubtthatPinterestisarecent"upstart".Ifyoufindanicepicturefromyourfriend,youcanrepintoyourownboard,whichissimilartothefunctionofretweetinTwitter.Italsohasthefunctionofsharing.Thesourceofpicturescanbefromothersocialnetworkwebsite,likeFaceBook.Itisalsoworthmentioning,ithasthefeatureofthephotoalbum.Youcanclassifythephotosbyyourpreferenceorthetype.AlthoughPinterestperformedverywellandattractanumberofbrands’attention,yetitisnotwithoutrisk.

Newbusinessmodelsdependon“digitaltechnologysuchaselectroniccommerce,interactiveWebapplicationsandcloudcomputing”(Mari2012).Atthesametime,thenewbusinessmodelscansolvetheproblemsofgeneratingrevenueandcostcontrol.Thebusinessmodelsareanewkindofinnovationforthetime.TakeFacebookasthetypicalexample,itstartedoutonlyforthecollegestudentsattheverybeginning.Ifwithouttheinnovationoftechnologyandopeningituptoeveryoneaswellasthewonderfulidea,Facebookwouldneverbeafamoustradecompanyandgetsuchagreatsuccess.

3.2Pinterestbusinessmodel

SocialcommercesuchasPinterestwillsurelygiverisetoanewkindofbusinessmodels:

multiplebusinessmodels.Pinterestbusinessmodelhasthecharacteristicsofhybrid,multiplerevenuestreamsandoperatinginmultiplechannels(HemptandKonrad,2012).CompaniescantaketheadvantageofPinterestmodelfortheirbusinessinthreeways:
