STOMPwasformedbyBritishmusiciansLukeCresswellandSteveMcNicholas.Theymetintheearly1980swhentheywerebothworkingasbuskers,theBritishtermforstreetperformers（表演者）.CresswellandMcNicholaswerepartofabuskinggroupcalledPookiesnackenburgerthatbecameverypopularthroughoutBritain.
Cresswellwasadrummer（鼓手）forthegroup.Becausetheyperformedonthestreet,hecouldnotsetupatraditionaldrumset.Instead,heworeonedrumthathungaroundhisshoulders.Tobeabletomakedifferentsounds,Cresswellbeganbeatingoneverydayobjectsthathecouldfindduringperformances.ThiscreativedrummingledtotheideaforSTOMP.
