Thisyear’sfluseasonisprettyscary.Totrytominimizetheeffects,publicofficialsarestillurginganyonewhohasn’tyetgottentheirflushottogetoneassoonaspossible.However,evenifeverysinglepersongotashotinthearm,thevaccine(疫苗)---withitsexcellent36percenteffectiveness---wouldnotpreventeveryonefromgettinginfectedwiththeannoyingvirus.Knowledgeispower,sohere'swhatgoesoninyourbodywhenyoucomedownwiththeflu.

Theinfluenzavirusprimarilyattacksyournose,throat,andthetubesthatleadtoyourlungs.Butthefluissomuchmorethanthat.Yourmusclesache,yourheadhurts,andyourappetitegoesdown,amongotherthings.Tooursurprise,almostallofthesesymptomshavelesstodowiththevirusitselfthanwithyourimmune(免疫的)responsetothem.Unfortunately,theverydefenseyouhaveinplacetogeridofthefluisthereasonyoufeelsopainfulwhenyourecover.

Thevirususuallyentersthroughyourmouth,typicallybywayofyourhandsButittakesafewdaysforsymptomstosetin.Whilethisprocessmightcausesomeharmtoyournoseandthroat,it'snothingmajor,andnothinglikethesymptomsthattypicallyaccompanyabadorevenmildcaseoftheflu.

Therealfunstartswhenyourimmunesystembeginstofight.Yourimmunesystemcomesintwoparts:

theinnatesystemandtheadaptive.Theinnateimmunesystemisessentiallyanall-purposetool.Assoonasyourbodysensesthepresenceofanyinjuryorinvader(入侵者),theinnateimmunesystemlaunchesintoactionbyproducingtinyproteinscalledcytokinesandchemokines.Thecytokinesreproducealmostimmediatelyandstarttoattackthevirus.Thisincreaseinimmunecellscreatesanseriousinflammation(炎症)throughoutthebody.Buttheworstisstilltocome.Meanwhile,thechemokinesworkwiththeadaptiveimmunesystemtohelpcreateTcells.Thesecellsareaspecialtypeofwhitebloodcellthatworksinamuchmorespecificway:

Inviewoftheproblem,thespaceagencyhasdevelopedanewtechnologyandtrieditoutinwindtunnels,andnowbelievesthatitcouldbeputtocommercialuse.Thatplanewillflyashighas55,000feet—farhigherthannormalplanes—andmakeasoundofonly60decibels.That’sfarlessthan90decibelsthrownoutbynormalplanes,andisroughlyinlinewithacaronthemotorwayorabusyrestaurant.

“Aslongaswecangetendorsementfromthegeneralpublic,theplanewillprobablybesomethingthat’sacceptable,”saidPeterCoen,projectmanagerforNASA’scommercialsupersonicresearchteam,inanewBloombergreport.“Ifwegetapproved,wewillhavethefull-sizedversionoftheplanetriedoutandtheplanewillbeputintouse.”
