Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi(orWiFi)isalocalareawirelesstechnologythatallowsanelectronic

devicetoparticipateincomputernetworking.Itisdefinedasany“wirelesslocalar

network(WLAN)productbasedontheInstituteofElectricalandElectronics

Engineers’(IEEE)802.11standards”.However,the-Fiterm”isused“Wiingeneral

Englishasasynonymfor“WLAN”sincemostmodernWLANsarebasedonthese

standards.

ManymoderndevicescanuseWi-Fi,e.g.personalcomputers,video-gameconsoles,smartphones,digitalcameras,tabletsanddigitalaudioplayers.ThesecanconnecttoanetworkresourcesuchastheInternetviaawirelessnetworkaccesspoint.Suchanaccesspoint(orhotspot)cancoveranareaassmallasasingleroomwithwallsthatblockradiowaves,oraslargeasmanysquarekilometersbyusingmultipleoverlappingaccesspoints.

Wi-Fiallowscheaperdeploymentoflocalareanetworks(LANs).SpaceswherecablescannotberuncanalsohostwirelessLANs.Manufacturersarebuildingwirelessnetworkadaptersintomostlaptops.ThepriceofchipsetsforWi-Ficontinuestodrop,makingitaneconomicalnetworkingoptionincludedinevenmoredevices.Differentcompetitivebrandsofaccesspointsandclientnetworkinterfacescaninter-operateatabasiclevelofservice.

Manytraditionaluniversitycampusesinthedevelopedworldprovideatleast

partialWi-Ficoverage.CarnegieMellonUniversitybuiltthefirstcampus-wide

wirelessInternetNetworkatitsPittsburghcampusin1993.ByFebruary1997the

CMUWi-Fizonewasfullyoperational.Manyuniversitiescollaborateinproviding

Wi-Fiaccesstostudentsandstaffthroughtheeduroam(educationroaming)

internationalauthenticationinfrastructure.

Laptop

Alaptop(alsoknownasanotebook)isaportablepersonalcomputerdesignedfor

mobileusesmallenoughtositonone’slap.Alaptopismadeupofalargenumberof

componentsthatallmustfunctionwellinorderforyourcomputerexperiencetobecomplete,whichincludeadisplay,akeyboard,apointingdevice(atouchpad,alsoknownasatrackpad,and/orapointingstick),speakers,aswellasabattery,intoasinglesmallandlightunit.
