JohnQuincyAdamsbeganhiscareerastheU.S.ministertotheNetherlandsin1794.Afterthat,theyoungerAdamsrejoineddiplomaticserviceunderPresidentJamesMadison.AssecretaryofstateunderJamesMonroe,Adamsplayedaeyroleindeterminingthepresident’sforeignpolicy.Hewentontowinthepresidencyinanelectionin1824,andservedonlyoneterm.

AbrahamLincoln(1809—1865)

AbrahamLincolnwasthe16thpresidentoftheUnitedStatesfrom1861untilhisshocingdeathin1865.HewasborninacottageandgrewupontheAmericanfrontier,educatedhimselfbyreadingborrowedboos,andworedsplittingfencerailsandcleringinageneralstore,andthenasacountrylawyer,longbeforehebecamepresident.
