WilliamWordsworth(1770-1850),EarlylifeofWordsworth,ThesecondoffivechildrenborntoJohnWordsworthandAnnCookson,WilliamWordsworthwasbornon7April1770inWordsworthHouseinCockermouth,Cumberland.WordsworthsfatherwasalegalrepresentativeofJamesLowther,1stEarlofLonsdaleand,throughhisconnections,livedinalargemansioninthesmalltown.Hewasfrequentlyawayfromhomeonbusiness,however,hedidencourageWilliaminhisreading,andinparticularsethimtocommittomemorylargeportionsofverse,includingworksbyMilton,ShakespeareandSpenser.Wordsworthwastaughttoreadbyhismotherandattended,first,atinyschooloflowqualityinCockermouth,thenaschoolinPenrithforthechildrenofupper-classfamilies.WordsworthwastaughtboththeBibleandtheSpectator,butlittleelse.Afterthedeathofhismother,in1778,WordsworthsfathersenthimtoHawksheadGrammarSchoolinLancashire(nowinCumbria)andsentDorothytolivewithrelativesinYorkshire.SheandWilliamdidnotmeetagainforanothernineyears.,Marriageandchildren,JohnWordsworth(18June18031875).Marriedfourtimes:

IntimationsofImmortality”OdetoDuty”TheSolitaryReaper”ElegiacStanzas”ComposeduponWestminsterBridge,September3,1802”London,1802”TheWorldIsTooMuchwithUs”,GuidetotheLakes(1810)TotheCuckoo”TheExcursion(1814)Laodamia(1815,1845)TheWhiteDoeofRylstone(1815)PeterBell(1819)ThePrelude(1850),LyricalBallads,LyricalBallads,withaFewOtherPoemsisacollectionofpoemsbyWilliamWordsworthandSamuelTaylorColeridge,firstpublishedin1798andgenerallyconsideredtohavemarkedthebeginningoftheEnglishRomanticmovementinliterature.Theimmediateeffectoncriticswasmodest,butitbecameandremainsalandmark,changingthecourseofEnglishliteratureandpoetry.Mostofthepoemsinthe1798editionwerewrittenbyWordsworth,withColeridgecontributingonlyfourpoemstothecollection,includingoneofhismostfamousworks,TheRimeoftheAncientMariner”.Asecondeditionwaspublishedin1800,inwhichWordsworthincludedadditionalpoemsandaprefacedetailingthepairsavowedpoeticalprinciples.Foranotheredition,publishedin1802,WordsworthaddedanappendixtitledPoeticDictioninwhichheexpandedtheideassetforthinthepreface.,Featuresofhisworks,Wordsworthcanpenetratetotheheartofthingsandgivethereadertheverylifeofnature.Andhethinksthatcommonlifeistheonlysubjectofliteraryinterest.Thejoysandsorrowsofthecommonpeoplearehisthemes.Hissympathyalwaysgoestothesufferingpoor.Hesaid“Allgoodpoetryisthespontaneousoverflowofpowerfulfeelingsrecollectedintranquility”andthissentenceisconsideredastheprincipleofhispoetrycreationwhichwassetforthintheprefacetotheLyricalBallads.Wordsworthappealeddirectlyonindividualsensations,asthefoundationinthecreationandappreciationofpoetry.Hehasworshipfornatureandhestronglypraisesthebeautyofnature,andtrieshisbesttoawakepeoplesawarenessofnature.Hethinkspeoplecanbenefitsalotfromnatureratherthananythingelse.,Laureateshipandotherhonors,Wordsworthremainedaformidablepresenceinhislateryears.In1837,theScottishpoetandplaywrightJoannaBailliereflectedonherlongacquaintancewithWordsworth.Helookslikeamanthatonemustnotspeaktounlessonehassomesensiblethingtosay.howeverhedoesoccasionallyconversecheerfullyandwhenoneknowshowbenevolent&excellentheis,itdisposesonetobeverymuchpleasedwithhim.In1838,WordsworthreceivedanhonorarydoctorateinCivilLawfromtheUniversityofDurhamandthefollowingyearhewasawardedthesamehonorarydegreebytheUniversityofOxford.In1842,thegovernmentawardedhimaCivilListpensionof300ayear.FollowingthedeathofRobertSoutheyin1843WordsworthbecamePoetLaureate.Wordsworththusbecametheonlypoetlaureatetowritenoofficialverses.ThesuddendeathofhisdaughterDorain1847attheageofonly42wasdifficultfortheagingpoettotakeandinhisdepression,hecompletelygaveupwritingnewmaterial.,TheLakePoets,TheLakePoetswereagroupofEnglishpoetswhoalllivedintheLakeDistrictofEngland,UnitedKingdom,attheturnofthenineteenthcentury.ThethreemainfiguresofwhathasbecomeknownastheLakesSchoolwereWilliamWordsworth,SamuelTaylorColeridge,andRobertSouthey.Theywereassociatedwithseveralotherpoetsandwriters,includingDorothyWordsworth,CharlesLamb,CharlesLloyd,HartleyColeridge,JohnWilson,andThomasDeQuincey.,Death,WilliamWordsworthdiedathomeatRydalMountfromanaggravatedcaseofpleurisyon23April1850,andwasburiedatStOswaldsChurch,Grasmere.HiswidowMarypublishedhislengthyautobiographicalpoemtoColeridgeasThePreludeseveralmonthsafterhisdeath.Thoughitfailedtoarousemuchinterestatthattime,ithassincecometobewidelyrecognizedashismasterpiece.,Thankyou!
