TheJamestownRediscoveryFoundationatHistoricJamestowneandtheSmithsonian'sMuseumofNaturalHistoryannouncedthatthesettlersheldhighleadershippositions.Themen,Rev.RobertHunt,Capt.GabrielArcher,SirFerdinandoWainman,andCapt.WilliamWest,allplayedaroleintheJamestownsettlement.Afterbeinglosttohistoryformorethan400years,thediscoveryoftheirremainsprovidesnewcluesabouttheirlifeandtheimportanceofreligioninthe1600s.
“Thisisaveryimportantdiscovery,”JamestownRediscoveryFoundationPresidentJamesHornsaidinastatement.“ThesemenwereamongthefirstfoundersofEnglishAmerica."
About100peoplesettledalongtheJamesRiverinwhatwouldbecomethefirstEnglishsettlementm1607.Duringthattime,settlersinJamestownwerefacedwithfamineanddiseaseThecolonywasnearly wipedout duetoconflictwithNativeAmericansintheareaandwithotherEnglishsettlers.
