FOREWORD

1)TheIEC(InternationalElectrotechnicalCommission)isaworldwideorganizationforstandardizationcomprisingallnationalelectrotechnicalcommittees(IECNationalCommittees).TheobjectoftheIECistopromoteInternationalcooperationonallquestionsconcerningstandardizationintheelectricalandelectronicfields.Tothisendandinadditiontootheractivities,theIECpublishesinternationalStandards.Theirpreparationisentrustedtotechnicalcommittees;anyIECNationalCommitteeinterestedinthesubjectdealtwithmayparticipateinthispreparatorywork.International,governmentalandnon-governmentalorganizationsliaisingwiththeIECalsoparticipateinthispreparation.TheIECcollaboratescloselywiththeInternationalOrganizationforStandardization(ISO)inaccordancewithconditionsdeterminedbyagreementbetweenthetwoorganizations.

2)TheformaldecisionsoragreementsoftheIECattechnicalmatters,preparedbytechnicalcommitteesonwhichalltheNationalCommitteeshavingaspecialinterestthereinarerepresented,express,asnearlyaspossible,aninternationalconsensusofopiniononthesubjectsdealtwith.

3)Theyhavetheformofrecommendationsforinternationalusepublishedintheformofstandards,technicalreportsorguidesandtheyareacceptedbytheNationalCommitteesinthatsense.

4)Inordertopromoteinternationalunification,IECNationalCommitteesundertaketoapplyIECInternationalStandardstransparentlytothemaximumextentpossibleintheirnationalandregionalstandards.AnydivergencebetweentheIECStandardandthecorrespondingnationalorregionalstandardshallbeclearlyindicatedinthelatter.

5)TheIECprovidesnomarkingproceduretoindicateitsapprovalandcannotberenderedresponsibleforanyequipmentdeclaredtobeinconformitywithoneofitsstandards.

6)AttentionisdrawntothepossibilitythatsomeoftheelementsofthisInternationalStandardmaybethesubjectofpatentrights.TheIECshallnotbeheldresponsibleforidentifyinganyorallsuchpatentrights.

1ScopeandObject

ThisInternationalStandardspecifiestheminimumrequirementsforthedesignqualificationandtypeapprovalofconcentratorphotovoltaic(CPV)receiversandmodulessuitableforlong-termoperationingeneralopen-airclimatesasdefinedinIEC60721-2-1.ThetestsequenceisbasedlargelyonthatspecifiedinIEC61215andIEC61646forthedesignqualificationandtypeapprovalofflatplateterrestrialcrystallinesiliconandthin-filmPVmodules.However,somechangeshavebeenmadetoaccountforthespecialfeaturesofCPVreceiversandmodules,particularlywithregardtotheeffectsoftrackingalignment,highcurrentdensityandrapidtemperaturechanges,whichhaveresultedintheformulationofsomenewproceduresandtests.

TheobjectofthistestsequenceistodeterminetheelectricalandthermalcharacteristicsoftheCPVreceiversandmodulesandtoshow,asfaraspossiblewithinreasonableconstraintsofcostandtime,thattheCPVreceiversandmodulesarecapableofwithstandingprolongedexposureinclimatesdescribedinthescope.TheactuallifeexpectancyofCPVreceiversandmodulessoqualifiedwilldependontheirdesign,theirenvironmentandtheconditionsunderwhichtheyareoperated.

2NormativeReferences

Thefollowingnormativereferencescontainprovisionswhich,throughreferencedinthistext,constituteprovisionsofthisInternationalStandard.Allnormativereferencesaresubjecttorevision.Forundatedreferences,thelatesteditionofthereferenceddocument(includinganyamendments)applies.Fordatedreferences,onlytheeditioncitedapplies,buttheinvestigationtothepossibilityofapplyingthemostrecenteditionsishighlyencouraged.MembersofIECandISOmaintainregistersofcurrentlyvalidInternationalStandards.

3TermsandDefinitions

Forthepurposesofthisdocument,thefollowingtermsanddefinitionsapply.

-Concentrator:

Atermassociatedwithphotovoltaicdevicesthatuseconcentratedsunlight.

-Concentratorcell:

Thebasicphotovoltaicdevicewhichisusedundertheilluminationofconcentratedsunlight.

-Concentratoroptics:

Anopticaldevicewhichincreasesthelightintensityfromitsinputtooutput.Typically,itisalensoramirror.Aprimaryopticsreceivesunconcentratedsunlightandoutputsaconcentratedlight.Asecondaryopticsreceivesconcentratedlightfromtheprimaryoptics,andperformsoneormorefollowingfunctions:

furtherconcentrating,filteringspectrum,modifyinglightintensitydistribution,orchanginglightdirection.

-Concentratorreceiver:

Agroupofoneormoreconcentratorcellsandsecondaryoptics(ifpresent)thatacceptsconcentratedsunlightandincorporatesthemeansforthermalandelectricenergytransfer.Areceivercouldbemadeofseveralsub-receivers.Thesub-receiverisasmallerportionofthefullsizereceiver.

-Concentratormodule:

Agroupofreceivers,optics,andotherrelatedcomponentssuchasinterconnectionandmounting,thatacceptsunconcentratedsunlight.Allabovecomponentsareusuallyprefabricatedasoneunit,andthefocuspointisnotfieldadjustable.Amodulecouldbemadeofseveralsub-modules.Thesub-moduleisasmallerportionofthefullsizemodule.

-Concentratorassembly:

Agroupofreceivers,optics,andotherrelatedcomponentssuchasinterconnectionandmounting,thatacceptsunconcentratedsunlight.Allabovecomponentswouldusuallybeshippedseparatelyandneedsomefieldinstallation,andthefocuspointisfieldadjustable.Anassemblycouldbemadeofseveralsub-assemblies.Thesub-assemblyisasmallerportionofthefullsizeassembly.

4Sampling

Sevenreceiversectionsandfivemodules(plussparesasdesired)arerequiredtocompleteallthespecifiedtests.Forassemblies,fivemodulescouldbereplacedbyfivepiecesofprimaryoptics.Forreflectivetroughanddishconcentrator,itmeansfive“mirrors”.Ontherestofthisstandard,only“module”willbementioned,butifapplicable,itshouldbeunderstoodas“primaryoptics”,or“mirrors”,forassemblies.

Thesetestsamplesshouldbetakenatrandomfromaproductionbatchorbatches.Whenthesamplestobetestedareprototypesofanewdesignandnotfromproduction,orsub-receiversandsub-modulesareused,thesefactsshouldbenotedinthetestreport(seeclause8).

Thetestsamplesshouldhavebeenmanufacturedfromspecifiedmaterialsandcomponentsinaccordancewiththerelevantdrawingsandprocessinstructionsandshouldhavebeensubjectedtothemanufacturer’snormalinspection,qualitycontrolandproductionacceptanceprocedures.Theyshouldbecompleteineverydetailandshouldbeaccompaniedbythemanufacturer’shandling,mounting,connectionandoperationmanuals.Samplesshouldnotbepre-conditioned,e.g.,light-soakedorsubjecttootherspecialproceduresthatarenotapartofstandardproduction.

IftheIntrusivebypass-diodethermaltestistobeperformed,anadditionalspeciallyfabricatedreceiverwithelectricalleadsandthermocouplesbroughtoutforaccessingindividualdiodeisrequired.

Incasethatafullsizereceiverormoduleistoolargetofitintoavailabletestingequipment,suchasenvironmentalchambers,orafullsizereceiverormoduleistooexpensive(considera20kWreflectivedishconcentratorsystem,sevenreceiversectionsaccountfor140kWPVcells),arepresentativesample,sub-receiverorsub-module,canbesu
