TRAPPIST—1isareddwarfstar(红矮星),muchsmallerthanoursun,butlargerthanJupiter(木星).Ifthesunwerethesizeofabasketball,TRAPPIST—1wouldbethesizeofagolfball.Thisstarisoneofourclosestneighbors,justlikethemoontotheearthinspace.

WhenastronomersusingEarth-basedtelescopestostudyTRAPPIST—1,theynoticedthateveryonceinawhile,itbecameslightlydim(昏暗).Theydecidedthataplanetmustbepassinginfrontofthestar,blockingpartofthelight.Thisdimmingwouldcomeandgoastheplanetorbitedthestar,passingalternately(交替地)behindandinfrontofthestarregularly.

Bymakingcarefulobservations,astronomersexpectedtogetaroughideaoftheplanet’ssizefromthepatternofdimminglight.Butthelightlevelchangedoftenandnotatevenlyspaced(间隔的)times.Theastronomershadtoconcludetheywerelookingatmorethanoneplanet!

Togetadditionaldata,NASA’sSpitzerSpaceTelescopemeasuredTRAPPIST—1’sbrightnessnearlycontinuouslyfor20days,catching34crossingsofplanetsinfrontofthestar.Sortingthroughthemessofdata,theastronomersfoundthattheinnermostplanetcompletesitsorbitin1.5Earthdays,whiletheoutermostplanettakes20days.Onceyouknowhowlongittakeseachplanettocompleteanorbit,youcanworkouthowfaritisfromthestarcomparedwiththeotherplanets.
