UNIT2

Thiswaswhatallofthetrainingandpainwasabout-winning.IwatchedTVtoseetheyoungrunnerwhohadbeenundermycoachingforthelastfewyears.Iwouldhavebeenthereonthespothaditnotbeenforthetrafficproblem.Icouldn’tmakeitevenonmybicycle.WhileIwatchedtheyoungrunnerentertothecheersofthousandsofpeople,Icouldnothelpthinkingofthepainsthathehadgonethroughinhistraining.

Theyoungrunnerwashardlyconsideredtobepromisingwhenhefirstcametome.Therewerecountlesstrainingsessionsfullofpainforhim.IhadseenfatiguewrittenonhisfaceIhadheardhimswearatme.Ihadbeenindifferenttohisangerandpain.Itwasclearthatonlyhardworkcouldearnhimsuccess.IhadsmiledtomyselfwhenIfoundthathehadtoomuchpassiontogiveup.Andhewouldpersistwiththetraininguntilhereachedperfection.Ihadneverforgottoremindhimthatdespitethechallengeshehadtokeeponpractice.ItwasunfairthathehadnotimeforhisGF.Butthatwaslifeforhim.

ThethunderousshoutsandcheersdrewmebacktotheTVscreen.Oh,mydear,theyoungrunnerwasgainingspeed.Hewasrunningtothefinishline.Hewasstrongenoughtobeatotherrunners.Hiscourage,heartanddisciplinetogetherwithhisyearsofpracticewonhimthehonor.TearsrolleddownmycheekswhenIfoundonthescreentheyoungrunnerwaslookingaround.Iunderstoodatoncethathewaslookingforme.Foryear,hehadbecomesousedtomypresence,successorfailure.Itmusthaveseemedstrangeforhimtofindmemissing.

UNIT3

Myhusband,however,doesn’tcarehowmuchIspendandourmarriageneverbecomeabusinessbecauseitalreadywasone.Youcouldsay,wehaveamutualunderstanding.Weareveryrealisticaboutthewholething.Itispainfulformyfriendswhentheyrealizethatloveisjustanillusion.Marriageforloveneverexistedforme.And,he’llneverdivorceme.He’dlosetoomuchmoney.

Loveisimportantbecausewithoutitlifehasnomeaningorpurpose.ILoveallowsustodomorethanwecouldeveraccomplishwithoutitspower.Sooftenwetakegoodcareofourphysicalneeds.Wemakesureourbodiesarefed,cleaned,clothed,exercisedandrested.However,wetendtooverlookthemostimportantneed-love.Ofcourse,asasociety,loveisnotoverlooked.Popularmediaconstantlyplacesgreatemphasisonwhatweneedtodotoattract”love”.Butbeinglovedisnotaspowerfulanemotionalneedasthatdesiretolovesomeoneelse.

Theneedtoloveandcareforotherisbuiltintousbiologically.Thisneediswhatallowsparentstogiveupsleepandfoodwhileraisingtheirchildren.Thisneediswhatallowspeopletoputthemselvesatrisktosaveotherfromnaturaldisastersorthreats.

Lovemeanstocherish,holddear,andtreasure.Wedonothurt,harm,orcausepaintothosewelove;rather,weseektoalleviatetheirsuffering.It’snotaboutwantingtopossessorcontrolothers;it’saboutwantingtosetthemfree.Loveisthepowerthatallowsthewheeloflifetocontinueturning,forwhenwelovebeyondourownneedsanddesires.Wesacrificeourtime,ourenergy,ourwishes,andsometimesevenourselvesbecauseoflove.Itislovethatallowsemergencyservicespersonneltofacedanger.Itislovethatallowssoldierstoriskeverything.Theultimatedefinitionofloveisnotaboutfeelinggoodbutratheraboutdoinggood.
