Indeed,participantsinthestudyreportedgettingbetween30and45minutesofexerciseaday,onaverage.

Theresultsaresupportedbyanewfieldofresearchthatshowshowlongperiodsofinactivitycanaffectthebody’sprocessingoffatsandothersubstancesthatcontributetoheartrisk.Andtheysuggestthatpeoplecanhelpdecreasesuchrisksimplybyavoidingextendedperiodsofsitting.

Keepingsuchprocessesworkingmoreeffectivelydoesn’trequireconstantintenseexercise,butconsciouslyaddingmoreroutinemovementtoyourlifemighthelp,doctorssay.“Juststandingisbetterthansitting,”saysGerardFletcher,acardiologistatMayoClinic,Jacksonville,Fla.,whoworksstandingupathiscomputer.“Whenyoustandup,youshufflearoundalittlebitandusemusclesnotrequiredwhenyouaresittingorlyingdown.”
