Planningforthebridgebeganinthe1920swhentheareaaroundSanFranciscowasgrowing.Peoplelivingintheareaneededanotherwaytogettothecitybesidessmallferries(渡船).

JosephStrausswasthechiefengineerfortheproject.Workbeganin1934.Mr.Straussdemandedthestrongestsafetyprotectionsinthehistoryofbridgebuilding.Theseincludedthefirstuseof“hardhats”toprotecttheworkers'headsandspecialglassestoprotecttheireyes.

Aspecialsafetynetwassuspended(挂)underthebridge.Thisnetsavedthelivesof19menduringtheconstruction.However,11otherworkerswerekilledwhentheyfellfromthebridgethroughthenet.Still,thiswasanewsafetyrecordforthetime.
