Tostudytheconnectionbetweenworkandleisure(休闲)activities,researchersemployed129peoplewhoworkedandwereactiveinhobbieslikerockclimbing,musicaltheaterandsinging.Theyhadthemcompletesurveystoseehowseriousandcommittedtheyweretotheirhobbiesandhowdemandingtheirjobswere.Then,eachmonthforsevenmonths,participantswereaskedhowmanyhourstheyspentontheirhobbiesandhowtheyratedtheirabilitytoperformatwork.

Researchersfoundthatifpeoplehavehobbiessimilartowhattheydoatworkandthattheydoinanintense(强烈的)way,theironthejobconfidencecansuffer.It’slikelybecausetheirworkandleisuretimehavethesamementalandphysicaldemands,sothey’realwaysfeelingdrained.

Incontrast,peoplewhohavehobbiesdifferentfromtheirworkarehappierandhealthier.Thisisalsotrueofthosewhochooseasimilarhobbybutonlyparticipateinalightheartedway.Thoseplayfulrecreationsactasabarrierbetweentheirprofessionalandpersonallives,givingthemresttimeto“rechargetheirbatteries”,theresearcherssay.
