IwasmadeProfessorofTownandRegionalPlanningattheUniversityofSheffieldin1999andwasHeadofDepartmentintheDepartmentofTownandRegionalPlanningfrom2003–2007.

InmyrecentwritingIhavefocusedattentiononissuesofethicalvalues,justoutcomesandthepublicgoodaswellasthenatureoftherelationshipbetweenknowledgeandaction.Iseektogetbeyondcriticalanalysisofinequalityandinjusticetoconsiderhowpolicyinterventionscanberenderedmorejustandequitable.Iexplorethenatureofjudgementandjusticearguingthatjustplanningisthe`artofsituatedethicaljudgement´.ThisinturnlinkstotheworkofothersintheDepartment,whoareconcernedtoexploreanddevelopcontemporaryconceptualisationsofsocialjustice.Complementingthisresearchhasbeenanexplorationoftheroleof`technical´informationinpolicy-making.Thishasinvolvedstudiesoftheprocessoftechnologicalchange,inparticulartheorganisationalandinstitutionalissuesinfluencingtheeffectiveimplementationofcomputingtechnologies,suchasGIS,andtheroleoftheresultingknowledgeinpolicy-makingprocesses.IcurrentlyleadthePlanningTheoryandPracticeResearchCluster.Forfurtherinformationclickhere.

Thisraisesfundamentalquestionsabouttheverynatureofspatialplanningandthewayitiscurrentlypractised.Thecourse,therefore,addressessuchquestionsas:
