LONDON—Dogsproducemorefacialexpressionswhenhumansarelookingatthem,accordingtoanewresearchfromtheUniversityofPortsmouth.

ScientistsattheUniversity’sDogCognitionCentrearethefirsttofindclearevidencethatdogsmovetheirfacesindirectresponsetohumanattention.Dogsdon’trespondwithmorefacialexpressionsuponseeingtastyfood,suggestingthatdogsproducefacialexpressionstocommunicateandnotjustbecausetheyareexcited.

DogcognitionexpertDrJulianeKaminskiledthestudy.Shesaid,“Wecannowbeconfidentthattheproductionoffacialexpressionsmadebydogsisdependentontheattentionstateoftheiraudienceandisnotjustaresultofdogsbeingexcited.Inourstudytheyproducedfarmoreexpressionswhensomeonewaswatching,butseeingfoodtreatsdidnothavethesameeffect.

DrKaminskisaidit’spossibledogs’facialexpressionshavechangedaspartoftheprocessofbecomingdomesticated.“Domesticdogshaveauniquehistory—theyhavelivedalongsidehumansfor30,000yearsandduringthattimeselectionpressuresseemtohaveactedondogs’abilitytocommunicatewithus,”shesaid.

“Weknewdomesticdogspaidattentiontohowattentiveahumanis—inapreviousstudywefound,forexample,thatdogsstolefoodmoreoftenwhenthehuman’seyeswereclosedortheyhadtheirbackturned.Inanotherstudy,wefounddogsfollowthegazeofahumanifthehumanfirstestablisheseyecontactwiththedog,sothedogknowsthegaze-shiftisdirectedatthem,”Dr.Kaminskisaid,“Thisstudymovesforwardwhatweunderstandaboutdogcognition.Wenowknowdogsmakemorefacialexpressionswhenthehumanispayingattention.”
